Tranny Leak

Hi guys. I'm looking for any help I can get and I think this is the place to get it. I have a 95 250 powerstroke automatic tranny with 180,000 miles on it. Late in the fall it started to throw out tranny fluid. It was doing it fairly easily in 2wd and 4wd. So I took it to a transmission specialist and he said fairly quickly that it was the cooler so he hooked a new cooler up. For about 2 months now it has been leaking only in 4wd low pushing snow, pulling trailer, and even just going to reverse and forward gears in fairly short time. So a friend of mine was going to tear it apart and maybe replace the front seal. Well he didn't take it out but we changed the filter, fluid and such and replaced a couple u joints on the front shaft. Well today just in 2wd it leaked a little and then I put it in 4wd and it leaked some more. Told my buddy and he is stumped and going to search around. He thought maybe the torque convertor is the culprit, or somehow it is not cooling enough and possibly putting a fan on to help. I thought I'd ask around here, cause you guys know all about this stuff and I'd really appreciate any feedback.

hi can u see where on the transmission the leak is coming from? It sounds like you had or have a few leaks between the transfer case or from the front of the tranny where the plug is. I had a leak in the seal on the transfer case that leaked pretty good if i was on the highway or pulling a trailer. it never got worse just checked the fluid every once in a while. not sure if it could be the same thing but

It is coming out of the vent but from there we don't know for sure. Is it possible that I need a bigger cooler or maybe install a fan on the lines? What about the torque converter?

Ok well I had a similar problem in my truck last winter pushing snow and it dumped fluid in the same place because it got too hot and I was due for a tranny service. I brought it to my mechanic who is a good friend of mine and luckly it was only a fluid change I needed but I was taking to him about it and he told me that for some reason he doesn't know why but if you change the front seal with the gray one I think it will stop it from leaking. I will find out exactly what seal it is and let you know. As far as the tourqe converter goes I dnt know.

I doubt your tranny is getting that hot especially with a new cooler and fluid in it. A way to find out what ur tranny is running too hot is to hook up a trans temp guage it's simple and way less exspemsive then installing those other parts. Especially if u dnt need them

Ok I talked to my mechanic he said u probably have tHe gray seal in there and for some reason if you replace it with the cheaper black national seal it will stop it from leaking. Even his transmission guy uses the black seal over the more expensive gray one that comes with the rebuild kit. Hope everything works out. Let us know how you make out with it.

Thanks Shaun, I had a friend of mine ask around and he seemed to come to the conclusion that the pump may be out, I guess it'll have to come out. I'll let you know what I make out.
