6.0 Ongoing Nightmare

Sorry, but I need to rant and get some advice on a 2004 PSD just turned 160,000 miles.

5 months ago started blowing coolant out the Degas cap under load. 2 months ago bit the bullet and did headstuds, egr delete, and new oil cooler for $4900. Puking problems went away.

A week ago truck died on me. Suddenly lost all oil pressure and truck would not run. Towed to dealer. They replaced FICM, IPR, and ICP. Truck started but died again within a few minutes. Same problem - lost all oil pressure.

Today my truck is sitting at the dealer, it doesn't run, and the bill is $2900 for what they have done so far. Now they are also telling me the engine is shot and needs to be replaced entirely for an estimated $15K.

Worst of all, I bought the truck used less than a year ago and still have about 40 more payments to make on it.

Other than thanking god that your not me, any ideas on what is going on with the oil pressure or other advice you can offer? Thanks.

Most oil pressure problems with no start conditions is the HPOP. Make sure they check this out.

160K and the engine is shot...I don't think so....if so, what are they saying specifically that made them come to this conclusion? Something doesn't add up.

I would be extremely pissed if a dealer threw $2,900 in parts at my truck and hoped the problem went away. I would advise you to tell them to restore the truck the way it was brought in and take the truck to a qualified dealer, because this one is not.

I agree, sounds like someone was just throwing parts at it and running up charges instead of diagnosing the engine. Print this out and show it to the service writer, we know better and have seen this when a non qualified technician works on a vehicle.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm just beside myself on this one. I never heard of one of these engines being junk at 160K.

Anyway, I contacted a more reputable dealership about an hour away and talked to the service manager there. He is skeptical that the engine cannot be repaired as well. He also said they would be willing to tear into the engine and give me a second opinion at minimal cost since I have done business with them in the past.

What a cluster$%@!

Good luck on this. I also believe most problems can be repaired. Keep us updated.

If the low pressure oil pump had debris run through it, there could be a possibility that more shrapnel went through the rest of the engine. Pull the IPR, and if theres debris on the screen, there will more than likely be debris all over. In this case, that dealer would be correct in recommending another engine. Repair it? High pressure oil pump, injectors, stand pipes, branch tubes, crank/cam bearings, all oil passages.........how much money do you want to spend?

The work done at dealerships is usually supported by codes. You see this a lot in Oasis reports.

Just a thought.....

The dealer did pull the IPR and replace it.

every truck is different, only you can decide if you want to stick it out. in the 4 years & 30,000 miles I've owned my truck repairs have cost me $20,000, am I done yet ? who knows, but it was my choice to not let this truck beat me, now I'm feeling confident that things that needed to be done have been done, thanks to people on this site

If you get anywhere near $15K I hope you have a Cummins 5.9 Common Rail under the hood of your Ford!! You could definitely do that for $15K!!

Again, the important thing is, did they find debris on the screen?

When there is no oil pressure, we usually pull out the ICP sensor and make a leak test through the ICP port. We were able to diagnose for just 2 hours of work quite a number of trucks with internal leaks. Changing modules and sensors for the heck of it is senseless. As they changed the ICP, they could have easily made the leak test

An astute observation. There was some debris on the screen, in the oil, and on the oil filter when they pulled them. Not enough to clog them, but definitely some debris than could be seen with the naked eye. The tech thinks that some contaminants might have been introduced into the oil when the heads were redone 2 months ago, thereby causing failure of the IPR and ICP. Hmmmm...........
