My 05 6.0 has trouble with cold weather. itll start in 15 below without being plugged in (as much as i hate cold starting it) but it surges and jerks for a minute or so after it starts. in 20 below i would expect this but it does it even when plugged in at 15 above. i checked the FICM and glow plug module. and just replaced the batteries. Any ideas?
Could be several different things. What oil do you use? Have you had the latest flash done? Fuel filters-age and what brand? Go to the 6.0 section, there is a TON of good info floating around there. Check the sticky at the top too.
This is normal for the 6.0 to a degree. The issue you are having is that the injectors are not operating properly due to thick oil on the oil side of the injector (stiction). There are injector cleaner products, like hot shots, but I would just put a load of 5W-40 synthetic. The engine on cold start is very sensitive to proper oil viscosity. The block heater doesn't heat the oil in the injectors very well, and not at all in the pan.
Get yourself some 5w40 oil. Good fuel filters. Try some Power Service fuel additive. You shouldn't have but 10-20 seconds at the most rough running. I basically never plug my 6.0 in here in North Dakota. from 20 down to -10 it starts the same. Fires off darn quick at -35 too.
I just bought the truck a few weeks ago, i've been busy making trips up to the brooks range in AK so i havent really had time to pull it in the shop and change out oils n what not. and the lack of power in that neck of the woods makes plugging in a problem. I'll change the oil to a good synthetic and change the fuel filters, hopefully that'll help. Thank you all for the input.
