have a '99 f350 ps and the switch to adjust the driver seat doesn't work in one direction. it goes up, down & forward but won't go back. is it the switch or the seat motor? any thoughts are greatly appreciated. I would like a better idea what the problem is before I go dumping more money into the truck........again. Thanks.John
Welcome to FTE John.
Sounds like your problem could be either. I am not really familiar with either the switch or the motor.
What I would do is find the wiring that runs betweeb the two parts. I would guess there would be a least 4 wire (1 to send power for each direction). Then get a test light and find out which wire is for each direction. If you find a wire for your 3 working directions and not for it going backwards then it would be a bad switch. If you find power for all directions but still no movement going backwards then it is your motor.
Be careful working on it when moving the seat so you don't pinch/cut off something.
I have the same problem with mine, I never knew it except my wife takes the truck more often now. I have have to wiggle it to just the right spot for it to work. I am going to take it apart and check for corrosion on the contacts I'll let you know what I find.
update. maybe this could help someone in the future.
took switch apart & used volt meter to check the wires. the direction i was having problems with had no current. took switch further apart and cleaned the contacts. it worked. haven't had anymore trouble with it now for almost 6 months.
I think there may be a little ball in there that I lost when I tried to fix it by cleaning the contacts, so be careful. After that it no longer would work at all so I had to buy a new switch, which wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be (<$40?) at the dealer and easy to install.
