Stupid choke plug broke off! I'm going to twist a wire threw the hole for a few days until a new one is available.

Does anyone know where this port that is covered by the red plug goes to? It was never connected when I got the truck.

I agree. Your engine has been modified from its original state. It looks like someone else already did the work to get rid of the EEC-IV/TFI ignition your truck originally came with. The square silver box on the driver's side fender is the Duraspark II ignition module. And the canister style coil is also a Duraspark II unit. These were not used on 302s after 1983. But they were used on 351s until Ford went to full EFI in 1987. I did this same swap on my own 1985, and my truck runs better than it ever did with the EEC-IV/TFI ignition. If you don't have emission testing in your area, this is good news for you!

I couldn't tell from your pictures, but check to make sure your distributor has a wire harness coming from the coil pickup. If it does, that means you have a Duraspark II distributor. If it doesn't, somebody messed up and put the wrong distributor on.

At this point, if your truck still has the EEC-IV computer, it is doing nothing for your truck. That means most of your emissions equipment will not be working, unless it is strictly mechanical or vaccum controlled, like the PCV. Depending on if the area you live in has emissions testing, that may or may not be a problem for you.

Its hard to tell from the photos, but IF that is a feedback carburetor, it will never run right without the engine computer telling it what to do. It will run rich all the time. If it is NOT a feedback carburetor, the Motorcraft/Autolite unit you have is a very good, reliable carburetor to run. Soaking and rebuilding the carburetor was another wise idea. But since you are running a Duraspark II ignition, you should be able to change your intake manifold and run that Holley if you wish without any problems.

If you decide to stick with the reliable Motorcraft carburetor, make SURE to get your choke in good working order. These carbs should have a "hot air" choke AND the "electric assist" connected to your alternator. Check to make sure the "fresh air" tube that is connected to your carburetor top plate and the "hot air" choke tube that connects to your choke cap are connected to your exhaust manifold. If the "hot air" choke system is not working, it will take a LONG time for the choke to come off, making your truck run rich.

That is probably just an extra plug that came capped from the factory. I think on my original feedback 2V carb that was capped on mine as well. It can be used for extra accessories. Since your truck has been modified to the Duraspark II ignition, the vacuum port on the left of the carburetor just in front of the choke is where the vacuum advance from your distributor should be connected to.

Rebuilt 2100 motorcraft installed! I didn't have the clip that holds the float stopper clipped into the valve plug so the carb overfilled at first, I then adjusted the idle mixture screws and the ol 302 is running better than ever before. Still a strange sound like a burnt valve and when I hooked up the distributor vacuum advance it back fires when reving, but runs ok without it connected. No more hesitation or other strange issues, exhaust doesn't burn my eyes anymore too! I am going to get my state inspection (saftey only) tomorrow and current registration. My friend runs the inspection both so he said he will let me slide on my turn signal issue, when you try to turn on the right turn signal it doesn't click in, if you hold it in place it works, left side works fine. Maybe Wednesday I should be able to swing by the shop and grab my timing light. I just ordered my MSD ignition coil threw amazon.com and I am waiting for my LMC truck catalog still... I got my NPD catalog.

As for the choke, I'm not really sure if it is 100% but it is working. It closes when cold and opens after a few minutes and doesn't close half ways or anything so far.

Next major engine upgrade will be headers, I want to eliminate the smog junk, and my exhaust leak at the same time. My neighbor across the street has a 306 in his 91 lariat with a mild cam, modded efi, headers, true dual with cats and stock mufflers and it sounds excellent, not too loud but a nice rumble. I might go headers 2.5'' piping to 2 regular mufflers.
