Hey fella's -- I'm getting setup to drop a new engine into a '92 f150. The 4.9L currently has 207,000+ miles and is dying -- having a hard time getting up past 3-4000 RPM.
I've been looking around at engine builders and different companies selling long blocks, etc.
I haven't done a rebuild personally yet and I don't think that this would be the engine I want to start on (probably gonna be rebuilding my FE 360 and converting it into a 390 about the same time).
Anyways, wanted to know if anyone has any recommendations, references to a good engine builder or a good company to go through that will have a fair priced and well built 4.9L that's ready to get dropped in and ride. I'm probably gonna start using this one as my DD so i definitely wanna make sure it's strong and can handle upgraded fuel injectors and some other minor AM products to boost performance just a touch.

Thanks in advance!
just to make a note...i'm not running it @ or above 3,000 rpm...but the fact that it can't push past 3 on idle and has a hard time in gears 1-3 giving out any power...it does still make it up hills at around 20-30 mph though.
Jasper want's between $1800 and $3000 for a long block. They won't sell direct so you'll be getting a price from a dealer in your area. The dealers all have different markup. Just a heads up not trying to deter you from anything.
I posted the links for info only. Some engine builders will incorporate higher performance stuff on a custom basis. I don't know of any that routinely do so for an I6.
yeah, that's too bad really but i suppose if they're gonna have that good of a warranty they'd want one of their guys doing the wrenching.
It'll be fun either way though -- i wouldn't mind building a 4.9L myself but it'll be a lot less headache to buy a crate.
I'm starting to dig into an LPG setup or something like that...sounds like a solid way to go.
I just wish the machine shops out here didn't have sucha mark up racket going on. It's nuttz. Kinda takes away from the whole build it yourself option...all right.
well, i'm gonna get into taking off teh EGR tomorrow most likely...the truck is throwing that egr code so...why not?
Oh yeah, we don't have ANY emissions laws out here in Hawaii...anything ya'll would do if that was the case in your neck of the woods?? I still have evrything stock on this one -- i've only had it for about a week now...gets real low oil pressure (oil pan gasket is blown out -- gonna see about doing an oil pump job on it too).
What muffler are you running Bill? I like some of the flowmaster -- Borla too -- i never did end up looking into the Cherry bomb vortex or extreme but those two looked interesting...i ran straight pipe witha high flow muffler on a 22re 4runner and saw some great upper and mid range performance in the pwr band but it definitely took a little guts outta of the low end torque.
I can't remember who was talking about it, but it sounded like the 4.9L could be a little picky with the ratio of Gas Velocity and scavenging effect the system is setup at -- i'm guessing a 2 1/4" pipe is what you want?? Tune the manifold (white paint low temp on the pipe then add the muffler just before the point on the pipe the paint stopped burning off and bang! -- readdy to spin tires??!)
I run a Flowmaster on my I6, but a Magnaflow on the V6 (Escape). The Escape isn't loud and annoying but sounds very deep and throaty, like a sports car. It only sounds better and better with time. I love Magnaflow!
And you're right. The I6 is picky about scavenging. If I could suggest anything to you, it would be to run a 2.25'' single pipe with a short Magnaflow muffler and no cats.
