Had a 98 7.3 diesel and pulling a 36ft 5th wheel probally close to 15,000 lbs. going over Monarch pass in Colorado. Pull was just a great experience, some black smoke, what am I going to experience with my 2005 6.0 pulling same load?
i never had a OBS 7.3 (btw i didn't even think they made them in 98) but i did have a 99 7.3 and what i like the most about the newer trucks is the tranny 5r100 is really strong and the coil over front suspension. i can't say much on towing like you are asking except you will probably be impressed.
I had an 02 7.3 and it rocked when towing in the mtns. I have not towed much with the 6.0 and towed zero in the mtns. But I am guessing/hopping it will be at lease as good. Like I said HOPE.
I pull a 12000 pound Heartland Bighorn with mine. I have not had it in the mountains, only the rolling hills of Northern Michigan. I can honestly say the truck hardly knows it is there. I was running stock at the time.
I pull my trailer over many mountain passes here in UT and surrounding states. My friend has a 99 7.3 pulling about the same weight. We have pulled side by side up some of the big hills here and I can out pull him with cooler temps. He has driven mine just so he can see what the difference is and he is amazed. Matter of fact, his 7.3 is now up for sale and he is looking to get a 6.0.
I have pulled my 36ft 5th wheel with the 6.0 but not up any mtns, seems to pull strong but i figure Monarch Pass would will be the ultimate test or maybe the east entrance to Yellowstone now that was some long continuous pull but my old 7.3 pulled it just fine and I am hoping the 6.0 will do just as good.
As time marches on, the knowledge base on the pratfalls and shortcomings of the 6.0 gets bigger each day. Just reading this forum will show you real quick that there are a lot of guy's who have the engine figured out. Cheezit said it best the other day when he told of the engine being dumped on the dealer network with little or no tech training. FMC did themselves no favors by letting the ambulance debacle spin out of control. The poor diesel fuel standards in the USA caused fuel related issues that today do not exist. The customer base has figured out the casting sand issues and the terrible domino effect that results. The aftermarket companies have stepped forward and put products out there that further strengthen and enhance the engine. IMO, if you look at a potential 6.0 purchase with Bismic's used truck buyers guide, do not fall in love with a truck before you have bought it and buy it at your price, you will not be disappointed. IH built it, FMC sold it and good old hard work by the customers have made it so much better. The 7.3 guy's may have had a better engine in the early 6.0 days, but those days are getting short. Rant off
I have towed my 7500lbs horse trailer with both my 97 7.3 and 05 6.0. The 97 was an automatic tranny and my 05 is a manual. So the comparison is a little off. But the 6.0 will run silly circles around the 7.3. The 05 is just a better truck all around. With it being newer it also has newer technology. It will make a shorter radius turn and handles a bit different due to the coil springs up front. I don't think I have ever ran out of power with the 05 it is just a beast. But the 7.3 had more than enough power than I needed. It was just one of those bad ones that I had a lot of trouble with.
