not that it applies, but I have heard the washable filters such as k&n will fubar mass airflow sensors due to oil getting sucked into the throttle body......but thats fuel injection....just had to put that in here....sorry.
Thats only if you apply too much of the oil and allow them to gunk up the works
my dad recently went to the local performance shop and he was gunna by a big K&N but the guy at the counter told us that k&n made another filter thats the same but just doesnt say K&N on it.. and its half the price and looks the same.. we knew he wasnt lying bcuz we've known the guy for over 10yrs now and he works on old cars as well...
These guys get my vote for the best filter. http://www.donaldson-filters.com/products.html#air
These are spec'd by the U.S. military on all hummers operating in sandy/silty environments. The filter (Donaldson) is the ONE thing Ford got right on my 6.0 powerstroke (glad I got rid of that lemon). The filters in 6.0 powerstroke trucks are known to go 100K plus before needing replacement. Donaldson is what I prefer, but I'd pay more for a paper replacement filter than I'd pay for any oiled cotton gauze filter.
More air comes in thru bigger holes in the filter media, can you see any other way for one filter to out flow another of identicle size? Bigger holes means more dirt.
An oem spec paper filter is made to stop specific sized particles, if the particles are much smaller, they pass thru the engine with no damage. If the particles are any bigger, rapid engine wear results.
If you dont wash your filter just perfect (twice a year or more) and re-oil it just right too, you'll displace the already poor filter media and create spots with no filtration. This is one area in which frequent maintenance might not be the best idea.
I sincerely apologize if I've offended anyone, these are just my personal observations and opinion. Take it for what it's worth.
I like the kool aid reference, hold my seat on hale-bop.
I not a die hard K&N user just wanted to use what works. I want clean air flow, I was asking why K&N filters were bad, got my question answered. Took awhile, meaning it was more than maintenance, Montana's post was helpful, others not so much.
