Wet brakes

Seriously.. Why the heck are these brakes so darn touchy when they get wet.. or even when they are around moisture? Somewhat new rotors and pads. The drums are new, and the shoes are a smidge old and I think need to be replaced.

Apparently this is just a Ford thing, it happens with most of the Ford vehicles of this age. It's not a BAD thing, just a pain when I've been sitting drinking my coffee for TEN minutes and I go to move and barely touch the brakes and the truck wants to throw me thru the windshield.

I have a 95 as well. I haven't noticed the problem you state even after truck sits for days in damp, cold weather. I have Bendix Rotors and Drums. Bendix calipers and Wagner wheel cylinders. I have Bendix shoes and Wagner pads. Could the difference be in the lining material?

Mine does it too. Even today with 2 tons in the bed it almost put me through the windshield once. Doesn't happen all the time but I've been through alot of flood water this weekend.

My fronts are also extremely touchy and I'm subscribing too. It's so bad that with snow or ice on the road, just touching the brake pedal causes the front to lock up which is not good news, as you can imagine.

I've been wondering if certain pads absorb moisture and possibly swell.

Most of the time when I hit the brakes the pedal feels slightly mushy, but I have noticed when wet/humid conditions are present the pedal is very touchy and solid with no mushiness at all. That is when the fronts lock up quite easily.

Was told it was the lower grade pads and shoes absorbing moisture.. That came from the Bendix plant here in town before it closed up about 5 yrs ago..

I had an old 76 that did it and on their (Bendix) advice I replace the pads and shoes with the top grade from NAPA (Rayloc) and I never had the problem again..

YMMV

I got the best pads NAPA had last time I did brakes and I still have this issue. I don't buy the brake pad theory.

Mine gets this too. I just figured it had to do with something about the brakes needing to grab or something. I really don't know...

I have had a similar experience, But it only seemed to happen on the 1st stop. The rears always try to, and sometime succeed at locking up, and fronts grab really hard. But this can occur even if i had driving the truck earlier that day and parked it for a few hours.

As for the them being touchy when its wet. Iv only noticed after driving through lots of deep water. I believe its because water doesnt compress like the air between the rotor and pad would, causing it to feel really stiff and grabby.
