Does anyone know if these old trucks have a drain plug on the gas tanks? I cant get under mine right now to find out since it has been raining for the last 2 days. I'm hoping to get her in the garage tomorrow but figured I'd ask here, maybe get my hopes up for an easy clean out of the tank since its been setting for 25 years...
Im sure this is the original tank, does anyone have an idea of the best way to clean it out. I got a new fuel pump to put in the truck and am hoping not to have to buy a new tank for the truck.
Some of the guys on here throw a hand full of nuts in and slosh them around to break up the rust and gunk. Then I found this as quoted by Julie:
"The three step process is very simply an phosphoric acid wash to neutralize rust. The you wash it out with soap and water. The next step is a wash of denatured alcohol to neutralize the water and prime the tank walls. The final step is that magic white cream you roll around inside - pigmented white shellac. $7 a quart at Home Depot."
There are several vendors out there that make a coating product to coat and seal your tank.
It almost sounds easier to put a new tank in her...lol
Yep, If you want to clean and coat the old one, you will have to take it out. And hopefully it will be in good enough shape to coat. I'm not sure I'd fool with an old tank.
ya there is a drain in the tank. On my 56 it is right in the middle, on the bottom of cab in the back. I would definately clean out the rust with some technique. The three steps above sounds good. you want to get rid of rust and seal the inside.
Good luck.
Cant wait to see some pics and or videos of the old truck.

Ok so I'm wondering how hard it would be just to go ahead and put a new gas tank in her. I put 2 gallons of gas in the tank and didnt find any leaks but I wasnt able to get gas flowing to the carb. I put the new fuel pump in then tried turning her over to see if I could get any gas to the carb but still nothing. Is there a way I can prime the fuel line or something?
I tried to blow air up the line that runs into the tank and I couldnt so what and all is the process of removing the tank? ill just put a new tank and sending unit in her and be done with it.
Ok I ordered the new tank, sending unit and fuel line. I will be needing help dropping the old tank so if anyone has done it any info will be appreciated...
