i noticed on mine that the flange looked real thick. mine had a stamp from another company , i think it said flowtech on the header so hopfully it will be smooth install. but if you aint bustin your knuckles then whats the fun in doing to job yourself
I looked at the jba's and they seemed that it would hard to get to the spark plugs with that perticular design. The gibson would have been my other choice, sucks not having the funds some times.
I had the jba's on my 94 f250 with a 351 and soon will have them on my 96 bronco. I never had a problem removing or installing sparkplugs with the jba's. They were the best headers I have ever had, except for the price!
the ones on mine were made by pacesetter. thats the problem with buying generic - you never know what you'll get. but a big thumbs up to the guys at summit. not only are they taking the defective ones back, theyre shipping the gibsons second day for free so i can get that done asap.
well, I tackled it this weekend. Had no trouble taking the old stuff off. The original manifolds actually came off to easily which is a little troubeling, also notice that there was no gasket left on both sides period which im sure is not good. Now for the crap, im sure the headers would bolt up fine but the passenger side i couldnt get on because the y pipe was in the way and i couldnt move it enough to secure the header. And of course the Y wont even fit my new header anyways. So I have two choices here, either trailer it down to the exhaust shop and have them install headers and fix exhaust or send headers back and just buy a replacement manifold for passenger side and live with the stock setup for a few more months or longer. Ill be calling the shop to talk about price and see what they recommend. Now im not the original owner of this rig of course and i think they had the y pipe redone at some point and thats why its giving me fits. so hopfully you have better luck with the gibsons, if you get them soon and they work out better i might go that route.
the drivers side is on, the collector on the passenger side will be cut off so i can mount the header. then trailer it over to the shop to have the whole exhaust done.
Thats right, brain fart. well i painted mine black just incase i was going to send them back. I hope the paint lasts for awhile, it said on the can that it was good up to 1200 f and most headers dont get much higher then 700 i was told.
i had some trouble with the y-pipe as well, besides the fit. it just was too snug. so what i did was got under the truck and hung by the pipe to lower it out of the way until i got the headers bolted on...and that didnt work. so then i wedged paint stirrers between the cross-section of the pipe and the bellhousing, and then shoved a 2 foot long screwdriver under that. i used that as a lever to force the y-pipe down about 3 inches. after that, it was well out of the way of the header collector, so i could get the bolts lined up with ease. you might try that before you trailer your rig over there. also, when you use the lever like that it makes it a lot easier to line up the flanges on the header and the y-pipe when you are ready to bolt the things on.
regardless the collectors are to small and wont bolt up to the headers. Thats why i was just going to hack that side off. I would try and pry it down but i weight about as much as the headers do. but ill give it a try.
you get a long enough lever you can pry anything down. heck, you can even get a jack under a piece of rebar or something and use the weight of the truck.
at least this way you can get the header on...and if you get the header on you loosely bolt the ypipe to it to drive it (it'll still leak like nuts but it'll be drivable).
