I've read about an individual with a Subaru WRX who optimized his vehicle to run on E85. In the end, he was achieving 90 - 95% of the same MPG. He was able to take advantage of higher boost pressures because of the higher octane. It was almost like he was always running on race fuel. I have it in my head that E85 is best used on higher compression/turbo/supercharged motors to take full advantage of the higher octane of the fuel.
We might see more out of ethanol if the engines had higher compression to take advantage of the higher octane. Until then the engines will be made to run on gas and fudged to run on ethanol as well by advancing the timing. Maybe the ecoboost engines with 10:1 compression will make better use of ethanol.
Either way, oil is going back up so we'll see what happens with alternative fuels now that people will be back on the bandwagon.
i used to run it because it WAS cheap, 2.29 gal. now its up to 2.69 a gallon here in vegas, only 15c cheaper then 87. at 2.29 it was worth it but not if its any more then that. the mpg are horrible running the e85 anyway. 9mpg for e85 as suppose to 13-14ish around town for the 87.
