Hey y'all. Looks like I'm the new guy with a bunch of dumb new guy questions. Anyway, I have a 79 Bronco with a 400 and I know there are a ton of vacuum issues from the booster to the HVAC system changing between heat and defrost depending on rpm, etc. So my question is, does somebody have a diagram or could tell me how many or where all the vacuum lines are on this thing? I would really appreciate it.
Next question, I need a crank case filter for my passenger side valve cover. I assume it's supposed to be a push in style filter, but can somebody tell me diameter the VC hole will accept?
Last but not least, what all could cause a cylinder miss? Busted rings, out of time, bad plugs and wires...are there any more? Thanks for any answers.
I'll try giving this one last bump. I know my questions are probably extremely newbish and underneath alot of yall's expertise (because I highly doubt I stumped the biggest ford truck based website out there), but we all need to start somewhere. So thanks for any help.
On the cylinder that's missing, have you done a compression test? You may have a sunk exhaust valve - I've had 2 of those with that problem on my 400...
Thanks yall. I do have a Hayne's manual, so then that should definitely help. As for the compression test, I read somewhere the 400 should be somewhere 150psi and each cylinder should be within 10% of eachother, right? My question to that though, if the readings come back bad, that means bad rings/damaged piston/valve issue.
Anyway, thanks for the info. I came from a family that wasn't very mechanically inclined, but I always loved the old steel...and if you're gonna have them you're gonna have to know how to fix them,...and I'm learning.
You should buy a compression tester - I use this type - you will need someone to crank the engine for you. Test compression then squirt oil into the chamber and test again - if compression goes up that cylinder has worn rings - otherwise a valve condition is suspected.
As for vac leaks I first remove the air cleaner and look across the manifold for broken vacuum caps that need replacing. The aps are best bought in a NAPA type store in small packs with various sizes.
I do have one more question, and I think it may be over my head, but does anyone have or know where a good write-up would be for replacing ball joints on the D44 in my Bronco?

It's possible that it's your Vacuum Switch valve located on the heater/ac controls.
One last question...Does anyone know where I can get a replacement Vacuum Switch valve? I looked through a Dennis Carpenter catalog and didn't see one and I also check Bronco Graveyard and didn't see one. Thanks for any help.
