KLUNKING SOUND!

Have '88 BII 4WD. Last few days whenever i take a LEFT turn and then almost straighten up i get a loud KLUNK and a definite sideways JERK from the REAR END. Sounds like it's coming from the RIGHT REAR AREA. Think maybe BEARING? Noticed they make a REPAIR BEARING for these Trucks. Exactly what do they Repair? The Shaft or the Housing? Anyways, what ya reckon is causing that? THANKS!!!

jack up the rear end so both tires are off the ground to verify where its loose at. might check the lugnuts on the wheel to see if they came loose. also try to pull the wheel outwards like your taking the axle out (might have to get rough with it). it might have a half broke c-clip in there waiting to come off. thats what i would check first

Really doubt it's the bearing. Jack it up and move it around some and see if there is anything unusual. I would also pop the diff cover off and take a look inside. Make sure you spin the carrier over and inspect everything for cracks and breakage. You'll need a couple quarts of 80w90 gear oil to put it back together. The gasket is optional, you can just run a bead of RTV around the cover when you put it back together.
