What to expect

Hi,
I am looking into a 89 F250 with the 7.3 IDI, and I am wooundering what are some know problems with this motor?
Does this motor pull good? I dont want to repeate what happened to my chevy, in which case i overloaded it (24000 on a trailer hooked to a k2500), let out the clutch and bent the crank. Id hope that FORD motors are better built than chevy and dodge.
Also, will the new low sulfer diesel run ok in this motor??

The IH engine in these fords are near bullet proof. 24,000# on a trailer will not make for a quick trip, but you will get there.
You would do well to add some type of additional lubricity to the ULSF. These engines were designed before ULSF was even thought of.

main known problem is the Cavitation issues. Thinner cylinder walls so ensure the previous owner was aware of this and kept SCA's or DCA in the coolant. That way it can be prevented.

The motor can pull, that is for sure. It cant perform miracles though and 24000 on any truck below an F950, haha, is way over the limit including your chevy. Dont expect this truck to pull 24000 please, Holy Smokes. Now that being said i pulled a 5000 pound stock trailer with about 8000 pounds in the trailer up a 25% incline driveway like it was nothing. They can do well but if you want that kind of strength, 24000, you need something turboed and made by caterpillar! hahaha just kidding

You will have to make sure and keep lubricity additives in the fuel or it will lead to premature failure. Our trucks were made for regular diesel. They dont even like low sulfur. Howes, Power Service, Stanadyne, Racor all make good additives. Some can be bought at walmart, other at a diesel specialist or diesel parts retailer.

Best luck and let us know more on the truck when you know, all the details!!

LMAO They will run fine on the fuel, but a little fuel conditioner is a good thing.

If you have been bending cranks when you let out on the clutch, I don't know how it will hold up. I can tell you the ford cranks are pretty stought steel.

Damn bro, the best towing capacity i am seeing anywhere for a k2500 is 10000. I would say you overestimated a touch? maybe? just curious!

I learned that $2500 lesson then. Aperantly the axle and trans were torque locked from the weight of the load. The motor was turning and the trans wouldnt, thus causing the crank to trrn at the front, but warp at the flywheel.
BTW, dads 86 F250 (300, T18) pulled it without a prob, although he had to start in Lo every time. (Built Ford Tough)

Hey, i was just the driver. See concreate and steel statues are the family business. Dad and the supplier loaded it up, and i had to drive home. Long story short dads F350 (300, T18) pulled it fine, allbeit at about 40 mph, starting in Lo every time and going 77 to 81 (usually go US 52 to US 221, but thats sucicide at 25000 lbs in any truck)
