I have 2000 Explorer. A couple of panel lights have burned out (Rear wiper and rear defroster). Anyway I went to the ford dealer today to get new bulbs and found out that you have to buy the complete switch to get the bulbs. BS! Does anyone know anything about replacing the bulbs in center panel other than buying a complete switch?
You can source the bulbs from some of the electronic parts stores, including Radio Shack. If you are a bit more adventurous, you could replace the bulbs with LEDs (and current limiting resistors) and never have to worry about them burning out again.
So, I guess what you are telling me is that there are 4 different size instrument lights in my Explorer and I have to go to Radio Shack to size them up to replace them? Other than that all I have to do is buy a complete switch assembly from Ford to get a new bulb. Hummm, it's like getting a new engine when you have to change spark plugs. Just how stupid is that?

If I still had my 2000 Mountaineer I'd offer to take them apart and provide you a "sure thing" solution. Since I no longer have that Mountaineer I'd be more than happy to retrofit your switches with LEDs for you for the cost of shipping. I've got a pile of LEDs and resistors sitting around that essentially didn't cost me anything. I also deal with several electronic part sources that have better selection, better quality, and better prices than Radio Shack. I have rather high confidence that I could source a replacement bulb for you too if you'd prefer that route. If you're interested send me a PM.
Jusy for the kick I emailed Ford about the lights and here's their answer. Ford Motor Company attempts to provide service parts at competitive prices on a most economically feasible basis. Many factors such as product demand and available warehouse space are considered when determining how parts are packaged. Often these considerations make it necessary to market certain components as assemblies rather than as individual parts. We are sorry that the part you are seeking is sold only as an assembly. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you. You really don't want to read my reply back. Thanks everyone.
