I've been on the UHaul site looking at the trucks and vans they sell. They are claiming that the 14' moving truck (the one based on the F350) gets 12mpg. This is with a 460 and 4.56 gear ratio in it. I find that very hard to believe. Everything I've read on these engines, and personal experience with the older 460s, tells me that a 460 gets about 7mpg. What say ye?
BTW, they don't have a bunch of them, but I've seen a few of the diesel pickup based models there too. These sell for less than the gas ones. Here's the site, in case anyone else is interested in looking.
Be careful when buying an ex-Uhaul vehicle. They are notorious for poor maintenance of their fleets. Ryder is a different story. A friend of mine bought an ex Uhaul 350 cab & chassis for a decent price a few years ago. Not much rust but man were there mechanical issues galore. Bad front end, slipping trans, engine burned oil to the tune of 1qt every 500 miles, etc. Rentals lead a hard life, but Uhauls for some reason tend to be pretty beat by the end of their fleet use.

Yeah, I agree that you need to be careful. UHaul trucks are rented to any Joe Schmo. Ryder is more into the leasing business--a different clientele. Still, I think someone can find a good one in the UHaul bunch. It might take some looking, but I'm sure there are some good ones.
