Pretty simple job, 4 to each side. I think getting the valve covers off will be the biggest bitch of them all.

Once you have them out of the way it is really easy to take them out and put the new ones in. However, while you are there you might as well grab a torque wrench and tighten down all of your rockers too.

No need to replace the gaskets unless they were leaking. The reason they cost so much is because they double as a wiring harness for the GPs and injectors.

Just be sure to test your GPR first. That's the most common failure. Also, don't buy autolite glow plugs.

Have plenty of socket stuff - extensions, wobble heads, u-joints, etc - to get the V/C bolts out. Other than that, pretty straight forward. Also a piece of rubber tubbing to get the GP's out. You can use a deep socket to loosen the GP but it won't come out all the way with the deep socket. Slip the tube over the end of the GP and twist out. Yes, Motorcraft ZD-11's are the glowplugs you want.

If you need valve cover gaskets, and I do say IF then you can order them at www.partsguyed.com for 68 bucks. But the valve cover gaskets are reusable.

BTW, what is the resistance on GPs? I think I'm going to test mine too.

It all started this winter. I live in north FL but we still had some mornings in the teens and below. As long as i would keep my truck plugged in, NO problems. But if id forget to put it on the heater, you can forget about it! I'd end up draining the batteries tryin to crank it and have to drive the ol ladys car to work. So after reading a few threads on FTE i went out and bought a GPR from advanced and put it on. I thought it seemed to fix my problem, but then it started going back to those hard cold starts. But like i said as long as it stayed plugged in it would start fine. And now that its warming up a little here (70's) its been cranking pretty good. But ive had the truck for 3 years and have never changed the GP's and i dont think the previous ower ever did. So it prolly due!

You really should check the GPR (even though it's new) and test the glow plugs with a meter before you just start throwing money at it. I ordered by truck brand new and took delivery with 19 miles on it. My glow plugs still work fine with their life in the South.

Thanks for the response. My truck has 145,000 on it and i have owned it 6 years and i have never done them and as far as i know previous owner didn't. My truck starts very well though and never is plugged in. And i am up here im MD and it gets colddddd , so i assume i am good to go. Just at some point though, i willl probably do it for preventive maintenence, but no need to throw money at them quite yet it seems. Glad they fixed your issues.
