F-250 4X4 issues

Hey, I'm new here, have an 03 F-250 4X4 V-10, was up in the snow got a little stuck in the mud and snow, but I don't think all was working according to 4X4 usage. I basically dug a trench on my drivers side, with really no ruts on the passenger side. I was not throwing mud and snow like I thought I should be with Mud Terrain tires all the way around. I am assuming 4X4 was working, but I don't feel it worked like it should have. I wanted to see mud flying and this truck muscle through the foot of snow and wet mud. I dug a decent trench on my drivers side, seems like no trench on the passengers side and no mud and snow flailing. Maybe I am wrong, maybe it was working. How should it have looked, trenches on both sides of the truck. Does the drivers front and passenger rear spin, should all four spin. I did get out of it, but I was worried..... almost had to pull the shovel out. Like I said I thought it should be throwing mud and snow everywhere..................

If you have "open" differentials in both front and rear axles then the power always goes to the wheel with least resistance front and rear. So if one side of the truck was on slippy ground and the other side on harder ground then both wheels on the slippy stuff would spin and the wheels on the other side would do nothing.

One option is to fit a limited slip rear diff or a locker. That would improve traction a lot.
