The Allison transmission in the Chevrolet/GMC pickups is like the Rancho "branded" shocks on the FX-4. They don't quite live up to the reputation.

Also note the chart at the bottom of the article. The Super Duty is still rated to tow 4400 lbs. more than the Chevrolet/GMC and 5900 pounds more than the Dodge.

the Allision trannys are a pretty decent stock tranny, They are Hyped up a bit though. add about a 100 or so HP and they dont live long. The Ford trannies are a bit tougher then them starting at the torqeshift up till current. Now that the new tranny that ford is putting in has all the options that the Allision does Im betting its gonna be a better tranny.

Read on pickup trucks.com GM is getting ready to increase the towing numbers too. But dont worry people they say that the 6.7L has alot of room to grow HP/TQ wise and Ford might be getting ready to increase them to beat GM. The Duramax is streched pretty tight pushin out the 397 / 765 its said in the article. So the HD battle rages on.

here's why i drive the ford.

chevy= cheap parts that go out frequently.
dodge= very expensive parts that go out frequently.
ford = moderatly priced parts that go out seldomly.

every chev that i've owned died with in 6 months. every dodge i've owned within the year. every ford that i've tried to kill, never would go for the count. this is why i am a firm believer of the "Ford Tough" branding. won't drive anything but now!

Interesting how there's so much ill-informed bashing here.

So we don't know much about the new Silverado HDs, but what we do know is that the suspension and frame has been significantly beefed up.

So why in the world does everyone keep hammering that point? Sounds to me like Chevy is attempting to bring a really well built truck to the game this time. What's so wrong with that?

I, for one, am excited to see what Ford does next time around to counter these improvements GM just made!

two excellent points. 765 torque is a BIG number. I remember when the early powerstrokes were touching 500 and everyone was like WOW. 765 is a number you usually see in a Diesel Power magazine or something. I'm impressed..... yet I take delivery on my '10 V10 on tuesday

2001 and 2002 had engine/tranny issues to be worked out. Been worked out since the 2003 models were being produced in 2002 (8 years ago).

So far as I know, the cast aluminum heads haven't been blowing up on the duramax owners since the trucks were being produced in 2000-2001....That's 10 years......At what point will naysayers stop saying 'well, yeah...but the duramax is an unproven engine with weak-*** cast aluminum heads'?

I'm not saying YOU'RE saying that, but you get the drift.....

Not by accident, but also not because of the reasons you might think. Most fleet sales are determined by who had the lowest bid. I have worked for municipal and public utility fleets for better than 25 years, and Ford has usually been the most aggressive going after fleet truck sales.

i get the drift. but on the other hand i drove 2 duramax tow trucks that were made in 06. shot the head through the hood of one and the dropped the turbo. both had less than 30k on the clock. the owner went and bought a f550 with a 7.3 in it with 500k on it and its still kicking today! i reiterate... chevy does not have its own deisel... its japenese just like the rest of the crap thats under a chevy skin. but hey why argue.. its still a chevy and we all drive fords!
