Low CR on 1 cylinder could just be a chipped valve but it could also be a hole in a piston if there is noticable oil consumption now. 300hp on SD is not at all unreasonable, use a HO cam with 1.7 rockers and install a full exhaust system and you pretty much have it.

I mentioned the cam already. Use flat top pistons with valve reliefs for future considerations.

How big are the trailers you tow? If it's much more than a few thousand pounds and especially if the truck has oversized tires then it should also get 4.10 gears.

The firing order change requires no change in anything beyond switching around the spark plug wires to obtain the correct firing order.

Once you rebuild this engine, make sure the knock sensor is working properly. You should have never holed a piston with an EFI system and an operational knock sensor. Was it showing any trouble codes?

Agreed in thoery, but I had a knock sensor equipped motor that detonated so bad it lost power under load and there were never any codes set, so I'm not sure how effective the system is on these trucks.

Given Pauls experience I would be cautious about building in a higher CR during the rebuild and start using a higher octane fuel after it's finished.

Yeah you don't want to go too high with CR, the SD system runs pretty lean as it is so you don't want to push your luck.

Overbore has little effect on CR so don't worry about it, machine the block as much as necessary to clean up the bores.

Yes, but I would stay with the same piston type as what you took out, given the nature of the failure.

Is the hole burnt throught the piston or was there a mechanical failure?
