A few days ago a guy called me about trading my mustang for his 89 f350 4x4. It has the 460 in it and it is completely out of time. They didnt mark anything before the pulled the distributor out.
So now we got the new distributor and I put the motor on TDC #1 installed the distibutor made sure the rotor is pointing to #1 plug. Made sure all the wires are in the right spot and now it wont even start it back fires threw the exhaust and spits out the intake when I move the distributor counter clockwise.
Idk what I did wrong. Im used to diesel engines so please help lol
Maby it's 180* off ? Take #1 plug out, put finger in hole, turn over till you start to feel compression & stop. Find the dampner #'s and line it up to O. I always drop in a few degrees before so the dizzy advance can pointed straight.
nvm he didnt sell it. So it back fires like its a 180 out but when its on tdc on compression stroke the distributor is in the right spot so im lost now. I put a rag in the spark plug hole and waited for it to be blown out by the compression and then brought the balencer to 0*.
I think what im gonna have to is just pull everything back out and take off the valve cover and watch the pushrods to loose tension to be a 100% sure im on the compression stroke.
Just a thought, you may want to find TDC with a positive stop and see if the timing marks on the damper are out of whack. Just happened to me, my balancer slipped about 160 deg and my distributor was two teeth off and I thought I was right on. FWIW
what's missing here? based on the info, it sounds like a guy is trying to pull a fast one on you. maybe he knows the crank or rod or something went out, and so he pulled the distributor out to mask a problem? i hope your mustang is a non-running mustang as well. what's the whole story?
Ok time to get back to basics, check timming chain play, move crank back and forth and watch rotor movment, calculate slop in degreese and anything over 10 is bad, posible chain slip, check front crank bolt for tightness, if lose posible damaged keyway on lowwer timming sproket gear,
find tdc comp #1, a plastic plug or cork works best, and use a screw driver in plug hole for dtc confermation and do not rely on balancer marks,
firiring order is 15426378, countoer clockwise 1-4 pass side 5-8 driverside.
good luck and lease post outcome. thanks ZiptieExpedition.
