If it's original, it's prolly a NP435. Scrape off the grease on the side and see if there's a tag on the passenger side of the tranny. Post up the numbers and someone smart like NumberDummy will probably be able to decode them...

If reverse is where 5th is to the right and up, it's a T18. If it's to the right and down, it's most likely an NP435, but a late model T18 could have been swapped in.
I think the NP435 was only used in the F100 4x4 in these years.

Sorry, that's incorrect.

The NP435 (New Process 435) was introduced in F100/350's in 1965.

Prolly 75% of all 1965/79 F100/350's, 4WD's or otherwise, have a NP435.

Warner T18: The cap (8MTH7220) that retaines the shift lever into the tower threads off/on.

NP435: The cap (B8T7220D) that retaines the shift lever into the tower has two notches on it, is retained to the tower by two pins that protrude from the tower.

To remove this cap, it must be pressed down and held down while turning it.

People do not know this removal procedure, use pliers to remove it. This action tears out the two notches.

Now...you aren't going anywhere until the cap is replaced.

Odd that all the half dozen or so 2wd F250s I looked at had the T-18, including the one I bought, while all the 4x4s had the NP435.

I said this was incorrect. If you want proof...got a 1964/72 or 1973/79 truck parts catalog handy? If so...

Go to text, section 70, look at all the F100/350 applications for the NP435 and the T-18.

You will discover that the NP435 was used in both 2WD's & 4WD's, while the T-18 was primarily used in 2WD's.

Since 11/4/2006, I've decoded well over 700 VIN's and Warranty Plates here on FTE. The NP435 has predominated in both 2WD & 4WD's.
