Oh sure he will, because he's such a friggin' know it all...right!??

All of that work and diagnostics and no one suggested a compression test?
I suspect either an existing crack in one of the heads showed up when did an R&R on the intake, or something fell into one of the intake ports and is jambing a valve open.

well, my mechanic did a relative compression test via the ford ids, and said that they were all showing good. not the best way, but i've been told it's pretty reliable. the heads were never exposed, so i can't see something falling in there.

i see he changed intake gaskets. some have little locater clips that fit in holes on the head. maybe that clip on the lightning gasket isn't in the same location and is creating a small gap

gaskets are virtually identical. used both sets, no change. gaskets and vac leak at manifold ruled out. thanks though.

bad news. posted this info on other site 03/13:

"heard from him. cyl 1 = 150psi, cylinder 5 - 100psi. couldn't see anything broken on the scope."

he added a little oil to cyl 5, and the compression came up a little. said it's either rings or a valve in the head. didn't have time or equip to do leakdown test.

I guess I wasn't too far out in left field when I suggested a compression/valve issue up at the top of the thread here.

ok. i've been reading symtoms of both bad rings and a burnt valve. i don't see any excesssive smoke. i will check my oil level tonight. i'm leaning towards the valve, which basically means a new/used head. alldata states 18 hrs to do the head, and 24 hours to replace the engine (which i would do if it was a ring issue), so the labor would be a little cheaper if i am right, but the part would be a lot cheaper! we'll find out this summer.

checked the oil dipstick...and she was full to the top.

side note:don't know if this helps or not, but there is a coolant smell in the engine bay after the truck has run. any chance it's just a head gasket? no leaks on the ground.

weekend update: we were replacing the headlights connectors this weekend (damn high wattage bulbs!) and notice the overflow bottle well below the cold fill line, and a little dirty (not bright yellow). fresh coolant was installed not that long ago. no visible leaks anywhere. really starting to lean towards the lh head gasket....imo that would explain a loss of compression across the left bank, with #5 being the worst, but i'm far from mechanic material! the only other thing that got our attention was that the i/c reservoir was low too, but at least it maintained it's bright yellow color.

It sounds like a head gasket failure. If the compressed gas from combustion is being forced into the cooling system it is likely forcing coolant out through the overflow giving that smell.

that's where i'm leaning right now, esp based on my last post. still waiting to get the leakdown down to know for sure. hopefully next weekend. if it is a blown gasket, i'm having both replaced...the engine has to come out anyways.
