hey everybody im helping a friend rig up a 92 f150 2wd 302 reg cab long box auto with push button overdrive and factory 3.55 posi ,.. anyway long story short the plan we have for it right now is to basically just all the little bolt on stuff and tune up, our goal is to go by mostly any normal chev truck (350 or 305) so im thinking along the lines of:
underdrive pullys
remove smog pump/cat
headers (long or short still deciding)
true duals with magnaflow or flowmaster mufflers
cold air intake
new distributer cap, wires, plugs (thinking e3's)
set the timing
some kind of chip
and maybe a cam
So all this boils down to this being a 92 it should have speed density computer so im limited in cam options i would like to know what everyone is using/suggests
- other question is i have been looking a few diferent chips and im not sure what the best one for this application would be, once again what are you guys using and what do you suggest?
- question 2, im sure someone is running something similar to this combo or part of it what do you think of it and how well should it work against our bowtied friends?
-lastly, anyone have anything to add to the parts list or suggest one part of another? (ei: which k&n kit to use, or maybe another brand?)
sorry guys for making this so long, and im sure all of this is covered throught this site but i thought i would just get my facts straight
You need to do some reading. This type stuff comes up every week and if you spent a little time surfing or searching here you will find all the answers. Bottom line is most of the stuff in that list is a complete waste of money and will do nothing for performance, that truck needs 4.10 gears, a complete exhaust system including headers, and a HO cam with 1.7 roller rockers. Then put new Motocraft plugs and wires on it and advance the timing at the distributor as much as the motor will tolerate without pinging and you won't have much problem with most chevy trucks of the same vintage.
KN CAI, chips, throttle body spacers, fancy spark plugs etc is all a complete waste of money. Its all junk.
Give it a good tune up and some exhaust work. Don't use anything besides Motorcraft or Autolite plugs and just run a 3 inch single exhaust and a dual out muffler if you want the look of duals. True duals are really not going to give any more gain than that. Go with a straight through muffler not chambered.
I agree with both of them except the part about spark plugs. the best performance/milage i ever got out of my truck was when i used e3 diamondfire spark plugs. Those things work awesome.
honestly motorcraft plugs work great and the gain i got out of the e3 diamondfire wasnt enough to offset the cost involved in using those plugs. There was a gain but not enough to offset the 5.99 per plug cost of the diamondfires. but they are great plugs and i went from 13 mpg to 16 mpg with them
thanks a million guys. Port and polish heads and intake and a cam seems like the way to go, i have an HO came here but they are hydraulic roller,.. arent these motors hydraulic flat tapet?.. plus isnt 92' speed density? so what could i run for a cam without friggin up the computer? we will more than likely buid a carbed 351 in a couple years we just want something that works pretty good and can be driven daily (so no 4.10's... for now). And for exhaust i like the idea of long tube headers and true duals (and probably no cats cause its pretty easy to get away without them here). but my friend is thinking shorties with a highflow cat and this catback exhaust in the LMC truck catalog its a cat-back performance dual exhaust system with resonator tips. any opinions on them?
i have changed the cam and done the exhaust and rollerized the whole system on my 92 5.0 what do you guys think the next best thing to do is to make HP without completely swapping the heads, i just had them rebuilt so i dont wanna throw them out yet lol
im thinking of just port and polishing, but i have had the stock E7Te heads opened up to use chev sized valves (1.92 int and 1.68 ex i believe) and they have worked great for me. i use to get them done by a friend for nothing but the school we use to go to doesnt have a valve grinder anymore and i dont know what it would cost to get it done,.. what did you use for a cam?

That '92 motor should already have a roller cam in it so the HO cam is a direct swap. Everything I posted above can be used on an SD truck.. I wouldn't have suggested it if it wasn't. Shorties with an aftermarket Y pipe and high flow cat will work well, longtubes are better again but harder to attach exhaust to.
the ho cam has a different lift order to it than the truck so the computer puts fuel in the wrong cylinders at the wrong time. I know this because i just did it in my truck two months ago and it wouldnt run right
