I am having a problem with a 99 Exp. I cannot get the vechile into 4wd low. If i select 4wd hi the light comes on but I have no way of knowing if it is actually engaged. Putting it into 4low does nothing. The low range light stays off and the vechile drives as if in A4wd. Any ideas. The transfer case motor is 250 bucks. Also no trouble codes are stored and everything comes up system pass. Also is this system used on 4wd ford trucks.
When you go into 4WD high you should hear a couple clicks and maybe feel the transfer case engaging the front shaft/differential. To go into 4WD low, you must be stopped in neutral. Once in low, you'll know instantly when you try to drive.
It is def. not in 4Low and the light is not on. My big question is why no self test malfunction or light. Maybe it is a stored code. I am pretty sure the OBD-II code readers will only read the generic unless you buy one of the expensive ones.
Did you have the brake pedal depressed also? If not, it will not go into 4 lo. Put the vehicle in neutral, depress brake, then select 4LO. It should click in, and you will hear it! It is a definate clunk when it's engaged!
I know this I am def. looking for a problem here. I was look for possible solutions. I am pretty sure I am looking at either the GEM or the 4l servo motor. Just wanted other ideas such as checking certain contact plate pins and wiring etc... Sorry I should of been more specific.
There are also a couple of hall effect sensors that could be giving you a problem. there is one for the front and one for the rear. Check those also. If you get a Hayes manual on it they will tell you where to check voltages and sensor positions. Without a manual on these vehicles, you might as well close your eyes and guess at the problem. They a nothing more tham computers on wheels! Everything is run off the dang computer......yes even the four wheel drive.
I had a similar problem, but it was the 4WD switch on the dash. I pulled the switch, opened it up (be careful of the little BB&spring) and cleaned the contacts with some spray cleaner (plastic safe). Ford puts gobs of grease in there, and after a while it gums up the works. I used a little white lithium grease, closed it up and bingo !!
