Just came back from the snow. While moving the selector to A4WD, the dash light blinked on and off. While testing on a hill, the front didn't seem to kick in. 4H and 4L work fine with no blinking on the dash. I did replace the stock battery prior to the trip. Last year the switch worked fine. Any ideas?
I had the same symptom with my 99 Expedition
a couple weeks back. I.e. on the way back from
a ski trip, I noticed that the 4x4 light suddenly
keeps flashing when the switch is set to A4WD,
while 4H & 4L work just fine.
I dropped my car a Ford dealer here and they
found the "sensors" that direct the A4WD are
no longer working and need to be replaced.
They charge me $350 for the inspection and
replacement ...
Try pulling the dash switch, and open it up. It has a small spring and a BB inside, so use caution. You will see gobs of grease in there, and probably dirty contacts. Clean out all the old grease, use some spray elec. contact cleaner, and re-lube with white lithium grease sparingly.
