FTE Rules the Day!
Replaced the filter, o-ring, and cap and fired it up. Ran fine in the driveway until I shut it off ten minutes later.
Got in this morning and headed to work. About 1/2 mile from the house, the engine just died. Tried to restart a couple of times with no success.
Then....I remembered that the fuel bowl heater can cause a fuse to blow and cause a no start/no run condition. I had noticed the bare wire in the bottom of the bowl was loose so I started the truck and ran it for a while. Thought everything was fine but apparently it was not.
Opened the fuse box under the hood and sure enough a 30 amp maxi fuse was blown. I called my wife and she went and got a couple from the local parts house. I unplugged the wire to the heater, replaced the fuse, and it fired right up and of I went.
Never in a million years would I have guessed that unless I had remembered reading on this site. I don't know how much a tow and repair would have cost, I know I would have had it towed to the dealer because my regular mechanic doesn't do work on the diesel engine.
I am sure the tow and repair would have been at least a couple hundred bucks. But I was back on the road in no time for just a couple of dollars.
Thanks again FTE!
(and please guys, take a look at my fuel filter and bowl crud photos and tell me what is going on in there!)

I've seen the white algae in film processors, quite common It is caused by water and heat. It is quite slimy when hot or warm but turns to a hard white crust when cooled, real flaky. Once cooled it does not solidify back to a liquid. It is also very corrosive.
Could of been the cause for the fuel heater to fail for sure You might of got some fuel with water but I would think your "Water In Fuel" indicator should of warned you, if it's working. Draining the filter canister for a few seconds now and then will eliminate any water collected at the bottom.
