That's probably the worst way ever to install a WW. No way in hell I would use an impact wrench like that on a turbo.

When I did mine years ago I tried to REMOVE the intake wheel with the impact gun, but all it did was spin the turbo.
After that I got over my laziness and pulled the downpipe off to anchor the turbine and did it by hand.

I've heard of guys using a gator grip socket on the exhaust turbine to hold it in place, you'd play hell trying to get one in there with the turbo in the truck and the EBPV flapper in the way but I suppose it could be done.

Pull the turbo, remove the EBPV housing. Put vicegrips on the exhaust turbine shaft. Remove intake wheel.

The best way to change the wheel is to pull the turbo, but several people have replaced it by using a padded screwdriver in the exhaust side to hold the wheel in place to remove it.

Edit: Way late on this post, should have refreshed my screen after being here for 40 min.

My pleasure, just take your time and if you do decide to do the padded screwdriver trick, put the screwdriver in and turn the other end slow until you feel it bind, then slowly turn it out. If it doesn't let go, try another angle but do not force it if it doesn't want to break free. At that point, remove the turbo and remove the wheel.

My early 99 had to come off for the upgrade FROM WW to newer one.
The bottom housing bolt was almost touching the valve cover and no way I could take it off on the engine.
Even with turbo on the bench the trick with impact wrench didn't work regardless several tries. I had 1/2" HD impact, so maybe 3/8" with higher speed would work.
Anyway -once I hold the back wheel wit screwdriver -it come out pretty easily.
With new wheel I have slightly better boost and way better response.
Looks like fuel savings as well, but there are too many variations to say for sure.
Than there is a topic from a guy who tried holding with screwdriver and it slipped. Now he in on the market for new turbo.

I did mine with impact gun...No screwdriver. Just bump impact several times and it can right off.

not sure which way to try, would it be easier to just pull the turbo. on the 6.0s its not that bad. (have pulled four of them the last month doing egr block off kits.)
