so i know that this a 7.3 psd forum, and i am loyal to ford and the 7.3
but all of my other diesel loving buddies are true to the cummins they say it is the best thing out there and is much stronger and much easier to get power out of it!! they say when my 7.3 gets retired from daily duty i need to go get the new cummins! i just wanted to know why it is that you can get power easier out of one and if the I6 design is truly the best setup out there?
6 in a row and the CR are real easy to do it now and the fact that the HEUI are limited to what they can do for the amount of money next to a Cummins. But things are changing around now with the tech available.
As jdecker said, the injection system is one of the limiting factors. Is the I6 design better? I would say not necessarily. Better is a relative term. Some may want an I6 over a V8 due to supposedly fewer moving parts. If you want all out power, then a 5.9 may be worth looking into. I would still take a 7.3 because everyone can make, and has a 'fast' 5.9; at least they think that around these parts.
They are some nice motors thats for sure and I'll keep my options open down the road but I don't care how much power or listen to any ones lips tell me whats better or not, these Powerstrokes are made to last and what power I can get out of it safely works for me..Funny you mentioned this crazer42, had a fella that worked at the hardware store say to me, "You should have gotten a Duramax". I told him the Duramax wasn't out in 03 when I bought mine and I still wouldn't have bought a bowtie, keep listening to your friends...
I cannot say anything bad about the 5.9.My wife and son drive them and I maintain them.I have very little trouble out of the two that I have.I like the 7.3. But right now if I needed a truck and could not find a good 7.3,I would buy a 5.9........Not a 6.7 Dodge.
I would have a Cummins engine in my Ford. Your friends are somewhat correct. There is one major problem. To get one in a 3/4 ton truck you have to drive a Dodge. Just not gonna happen for me unless I win a lot of money and can pay someone to do the swap. I'll never drive a Dodge. And the new Cummins aren't all that.
It's not a I6 vs. V8 design argument, it's a fuel system vs. fuel system argument.
Face it, Cummins have the advantage. You can get more fuel, and you can continue to fuel at higher RPM's than our engines can. If you want to get technical, even the newer PSD's have that advantage over our 7.3L's and even the 6.0L's, as the 6.4L PSD's are common rail rather than HEUI.
Change the fuel system, and it's a completely different ball game. Just ask those Cummins guys that compete against Double Overtime. That's a PSD block in that truck, but with a totally different fuel system. Of course, it takes 6 figures in cash to get to that point.
Curtis, it is not just a fuel system argument, it is a design situation. The 5.9 rod makes the 7.3 unit look like a toy. Don't even get me started on the PMR rant. There's enough of the forged ones going out the side of a block and I have those lovely PMRs. Lovely and thanks Ford.
Oh look here, I see my supporter status has expired yet again. I thought I had a three year one. Guess I'll look into that some time but frankly I grow weary of messing with the folks who run this show. It may actually be up now, IDK? I don't really care right now. So yes folks, with this development my PM box is officially full so don't bother.
i guess this kinda applies to this thread. does international make a smaller diesel like a four or six that's based off of the 7.3 i'm looking into a small diesel 73-79 swap, but don't need big power

As far as rods, that can be fixed. There's aftermarket components out there to take care of that. But from a stock vs. stock standpoint, yes there's a big difference.
The real issue though is fueling rates. Even CR Cummins have had issues thanks to a locked PCM. Here's something that will change the Cummins game once again: DESTROKED: Cummins Conversions
Imagine being able to tune a CR Cummins the same way you can custom tune any PSD or Duramax. YIKES!!!
My next engine will be a CR Cummins, and it will be running the Zeus. Sorry guys...
