Is it the same engine?

My '93 4.0 ranger is still running strong at 150k.... and so is my 2000 X 7.3 diesel..... So, I thought I would consider the Mustang 04 or 05 V6, which is the 3.8 or 4.0 for my daughter to take to college.... But, is this same engine that the Rangers use, is it as reliable?

Thanks for you thoughts...

First off, no, those two engines offered in the Mustang are not the same as in your Ranger. Your 4.0 Ranger is all iron and has push rods. The 3.8 that was offered in the 04 Mustang has aluminum heads but is also a push rod engine. They have been notorious for blown head gaskets. The 3.8 was last offered in 04 in the Mustang. The 05 Mustang has the 4.0 SOHC engine. There used to be some chain slap issues with this engine in Rangers and Explorers before 04. But I believe they had been mostly eliminated by the 05 model year. There had also been some check engine lights on in Rangers and Explorers because of a lean condition brought on by intake manifold gaskets getting out of place and letting in air. I'm not sure if the Mustang line had as many problems with this since it has a different manifold. I'm not sure if there are problems with head gaskets or not but someone else may come on here to add what they know. I think overall I would choose the 05. It should have less mileage and be free of major troubles longer. But then, that's only my opinion.
