went to work on my 66 f100 toady. got the new springs, i beam and radius rod bushings installed along with 77 king pins and spindles. next couple of days i should have the rest together except for the ne brake lines! excited is all i can say as ive been waiting fir a while to do this. also have and 83 460 and c6 trans to install soon. will post pics as soon as ive got her together for all to see. retrofit was very easy thanks to everyones help from this forum! thanks agian!
I just completed converting my 65. I used the existing I beams, with 65 kingpins and spindles from a 73 F100. Everything bolted right up. I did have to get custom brake hoses made. I haven't driven it yet, as I am just reassembling the truck from a complete frame-off rebuild. I got the help I needed from this forum as well. I hope to have the truck completely back together and on the road this year.
wow am i just stupid or what. i have installed all the parts and my wheels lean out very bad and the front end is lifted up way to high. i really dont understand what i did wrong. i tried installing the old springs and that didnt help. do i need to use the i beams off the 77 to get the camber right? why is it setting so high in the front now? i took some pics but cant seem to get them on this post. cant seem to put them in my garage cuz the file size is too big. how can i fix that and get them posted. anybody got any ideas? my truck is a 66 f100 2wd and the disk brake spindles are ff of the 77 2wd. king pins are 77.
ok i finally have some pics in my albums under disk brake conversion. will someone look at what ive done and explain to me what went wrong? i think maybe i had it apart too long and put something back wrong or something. any help would be appreciated as i just dont know!
All right here's a really silly thought from a guy who hasn't messed with kingpins in a realllllly long time. Is it even possible to put the spindles on upside down? If so, that'd put you higher & off camber.
Common, common issue. If you've had the thing up on jack stands and haven't driven it out of the garage yet, it will have massive positive camber (wheels stick out at top). This is normal! Until the wheels make a revolution or two, the friction of the tires on the floor prevent the suspension from settling fully. Run it in/out of the garage and then have a look. I think you'll find the problem solves itself.
ok you were right. so heres what i did. i removed the left spring and put in the old one. they are the same height i had already measured that but i thought maybe the spring rate was different. it set the same and i even drove the dang thing down the road. i go into the house and eat dinner and come back out and back it out of the garage cuz i thing i have gone crazy and its setting correctly! now ive got to put the new spring back in but i guess thats ok cuz i know everything is correct! i have to pick up a caliper and 2 brake lines as they were incorrect and ill have the hard parts installed. i'll take some finished pics wheni get done. thanks for your help!
