What size socket for spindle nut - 2001 4X4 ?

Can anyone tell me what size socket I need for my 2001 Ranger 4X4 Auto Hubs. I need to check my front bearings, I tried a 1 1/4" and it seemed loose, a 1 1/8" is to small. I tried a 32 mm and it seemed tighter than 1 1/4" but still a little loose.

Thanks,

Bill

Did you try a 31 since a 32 was still loose?

Tom,

No, I didn't have one. I bought the 32mm to remove spindle nut on my Honda. I didn't buy the set as I figured I'd never have a use for them all. Does Ford use a lot of metric?

Is this for the axel... wheel bearing repacking..

If so, just use a large month channel locks... These do not go on tight, just used to square up the placement, then the washer locks it from moving.

Yes, yes they do. Try removing a transmission from a 4x4 ranger, too many mix and match sizes. (I'm in the process of that right now)

On the 4x4 SLA IFS Ranger's you don't repack wheel bearings. They have "hubs" like FWD cars for the front CV axle's.

The Chiltons manual refers to it as a driveaxle/hub nut and they tell you to discard it and use a new one on reassembly. They also tell you to torque it to a specification so I dont think we're talking about the same nut where you would use channellocks. Being they tell me to buy a new one I guess I could buy a new one and go to Sears and just see what fits.
With all the standard/metric mix it would be nice if the manuals would say use a specific socket for the job. Do the factory manuals do a better job of explaining how to do things?

Thanks Guys,

Bill

Question, why are you trying to "check" the front bearings? It is a hub assembly, unless it's making noise there really isn't anything wrong with them. This is what it looks like:

Tom,

I'm checking it becuse when I took it to a shop for another reason they told me that the bearings were bad and needed to be replaced. I took it home and jacked it up and found excessive play in the wheel.

Tom,
If the front wheel bearings are bad can just the bearings be replaced or does the whole hub need to be replaced?
Just curious.

Sounds like you're going to have to replace the wheel hubs then.

I just found this post and had a few questions about changing wheel bearings. First of all is this the same for a 98 4x4 ranger? If so it sounds like a piece of cake right kinda like changing them on a newer superduty. So you dont need any special spindle nut sockets like you would on an older dana 50 or 60. what do you guys think?

The '98-'00 Rangers use a pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) 4x4 engagement system, in which the hub/bearing assembly is a sealed unit. There is no spindle nut. And you have to be very aware of potential vacuum leaks when you work on them. Do a search of "PVH" in this forum and you'll get back a lot of informative threads to read through.
