292 yblock oiling questions

so i have started back up on working on the truck, and wanted to do some engine improvements. first off, i've read i can get an adapter to use the modern spin on oil filters. can anyone link one (preferably a cheap one) for me? and also, what can i do about the external rocker oiler? it looks worse and worse every time i open the hood, and i want to get rid of it completely, but don't know what i can do to remedy the apparent oil starvation that will happen if i take it off. any suggestions? thanks as usual.

The adaptor kit is available from on line, auto parts stores or ford dealer, maybe eBay, sometimes the existing nut adaptor that you have to remove is tight and needs a six point socket.

What’s so ugly about it? What’s wrong with it, is it leaking oil, fix the leaks, I am not sure that there is a fix for the y block rocker arms other then the oilier kit.

my 292 had a rocker oil discharge tube, that let excess oil run out of the shaft to the hole in the head for drain back. i pinched the end of the tube, to pressurize the rockers more. also i've seen a article for drilling the mains to allow more oil to the head, i do not recommend that one. it cost me a crankshaft.

Howdy,

People back in the "old days" put those oilers on the engines as a sort of "coronary by-pass operation" for the engine.

The engines were clogged because, not only the oil wasn't very good, but a lot of people used non-detergent oil and didn't change it frequently enough! So the oil passages that went thru the block/heads and up to the rockers became "sludged" and oil flow slowed to a trickle and eventually stopped when the passages became completely clogged.

The only REAL fix is a tear down and a complete clean out.

Once you do that the external oilers are no longer necessary. All oil now is detergent and people change it even more frequently than needed so sludge is a thing of the past!

By the way, if someone suggests you can use some sort of engine flush solvent (diesel/kero/gas/snake-oil/etc) to clean the engine......don't do it! If you plug an oil passage to a main or rod bearing and spin a bearing, you could damage the crank shaft beyond repair!

Cheers,

Rick
