Has anyone used Summit Single Stage Acrylic Ureathane Paint. It has been 30+ yrs since I have painted so I am looking for something easy to shoot and will look good as well. I read an article in Popular Hot Rodding about it and liked what I read.
Any input is appreciated.
Never shot it, but can bet that its made by someone else like PPG, Dupont, Sherwin Williams. Summit is just getting a private label made up for them. I like PPG (or Omni), a few other guys I know like Dupont and I know of a big rig shop that uses Sherwin Williams all the time with good success. To me, shooting single stage paint is pretty much the same no matter who you use, its about the quality of the paint. Just remember, you get what you pay for.
I'll be following this because I wish to restore an '89 cab I have on my junk truck and install it on my '89 diesel in the future. I would like to paint it myself, but get good results as well.
I haven't used it, but just ordered the Summit urethane 2k primer, activator and reducer. I hope to start shooting in June/July. Have you shot your truck yet? I'm not sure if i'll use summit color paint or get some ppg locally to go on top of the summit urethane primer?
I decided to stick with the summit(kirker) paint to go on top of the summit(kirker) primer. I'll be using the single stage red urethane, and hope to shoot a coat of clear on top too. I've got the guns ordered and enroute.
Ok Guy's I'm back.
I got the truck painted. I used the Summit Single Stage Acrylic Urethane (Light Moca Mettalic). I also went over it with 2 coats of Clear Coat.
I am very impressed with the total outcome of the paint job.
I will post a couple of pictures in my gallery later this week.
tbm3fan; thanks for the heads up on the mfg of Summits paint.
cigarxtc; I don't know your environment as to where you will be painting. We built a paint booth in the shop, added an exhaust fan and lots of lights. The biggest problem I had was going in and out of the booth to mix paint. Picked up a few dust particles, so I will probably cut and buff.
I guess the main thing is to have the correct temp of activator, and reducer (if you need to or choose to reduce). don't be afraid to give good coverage as you are shooting. It is great paint and flows out nicely. I used a Devilbis Finishline HVLP gun with the 1.3 tip.
Hope this helps.
Your truck looks fantastic but I'm curious as to what made you decide to go with a single stage paint. I ask only because you mention that you also applied a clear coat and was wondering why not just go with a 2-stage if a base and clear was in the plan anyway.
I'm in the planning stages of my paint project and am still on the fence on what direction to take. You finish turned out great so I'd appreciate any input you have to offer.
