you shouldnt need any special tools for this. I did mine with no probelms. be sure to have the heads checked for flatness while they are out, and if I were you I would install ARP headstuds while you are in there.
I guess it depends on what you consider special tools. How are you attacking the job? Cab off, front end off or hanging out over the engine bay. A nice 1 ton engine hoist with some extended reach is very helpful to get the heads off and out. They are heavy. Have fun
by special tools i mean tools that only the ford the dealership has and are not available to the public...and i was thinking of maybe pulling then engine since im installing arps
I did not buy any dealership type tools for my engine swap. The big nut on the fan was the only thing we did not have what we needed. We made do with what we had. We pulled the old engine out the front with the transmission and transfer case still attached. It made for some heavy lifting. None of the mechanical work requires more than decent shadetree abilities and tools. It will require a lot of time and a lot of patience. Good Luck
thanks for the info guys...what capacity cherry picker should i use?...gonna be using black onyx gaskets with the arps, has anyone had problems with these gaskets b4??? or should i got the the factory gaskeys?
the factory HG's are good for up to 500 hp +. there is no need in getting anything other than stock. the am ones tend to be a little more picky in installing them. where as the stock ones allow a little room for error. there is a guy that on ebay that sells the upper gasket set for like 500. comes with all the gasket needed to do the hg job.
There have been lots of guys using the Black Onyx gaskets. I have not heard any complaints. They are around $200 a set and you do not get 10 pounds of bolts to throw away. I have a 2 ton overhead chain fall in my garage. After we got the whole engine/trans and transfer case out we needed to move it into the heated garage area. My 1 ton Harbor Freight hoist could barely lift it and I had to ride on the back of the hoist to keep it from tipping. Kind of messed up the one wheel too. Heavy stuff
There is a special lifting bracket you can buy from Ford to lift the heads while the motor is still in the truck. It bolts on using the intake bolts. It is suppose to hold the heads in the correct orientation for re-installation as well. If your pulling the heads off in the truck it is handy to have...
do i need 18mm or 20mm dowels????? my truck build date is march 2005 and im getting the gaskets from international theyre $214 for both headgaskets with bolts !!!!!! i dont need the bolts but still way better than fords ridiculous prices
Should be 18 mm Dowels untill April 06 I beleave. I can't remeber the exact date now, but it was sometime in 06 when they went to the 20mm. So if yours is a 05 you have 18mm dowels.
