The connection on the top is where one wire goes it is the fuel heater. It is pretty for it to start leahing and access to repair it is inside the filter header. The other wire is probably the water in fuel light wire that connects on the bottom tank to the filter.
Is it worth it to fix the heater at the top .. I will look on the bottom for the water in fuel light wire that connects on the bottom tank to the filter
Are there any good manuals I can get for this truck ...
tdspurrier,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
You may also have a filter restriction wire in that area also.
The filter restriction sensor will be in the fuel filter header beside the fuel inlet line and schrader valve if your truck has one.
I have never seen the need for the fuel heater, but if it leaks it causes real hard cold starts after it sits overnight. FTE is about as good a manual as you can get. I like the proffessional motor manual but they are expensive and I don't remember who I loaned mine too.
Do a search on this forum, for fuel filter head. Somebody did a step by step demonstration on the removal of that heater element and o-ring replacement, with pictures. That way it won't leak anymore, and you should have easier starts. Don't be like me and rip everything apart and try to plug that hole and break the filter head. When 30 cent's worth of o-rings would've stopped the leaking.
I have the Chilton's 1965 - 1986 Ford F-Series Truck manual and it's fine for me. $20 or $30 at Carquest. It gives me 90% of the information I need, the other 10% comes from here on the forum. The manual is nice for torque readings and torque sequences.
I also have the Haynes diesel manual. It covers the IDI's, Powerstrokes, and the GM diesels. Another $20 and it works fine for me. Picked this manual up at Advanced Auto.
