Motor Mounts

How often should they be replaced? How do you tell when they're worn? Mine are definitely original. Are they a PITA to replace? Which ones did you buy to replace your worn out ones, Motorcraft or aftermarket?

Mine are still original.

If I have not broken one yet, you should have no problems.

I haven't had to change mine yet. As long as they aren't oil soaked or deteriated I'm keeping them. These mounts are encapsulated so a failed mount isn't even noticed sometimes unlike a dodge gasser which would cut it's own radiator hose of at a failure.

When you shut your truck off, does your motor give a good shake as it shuts off?

That's why I think my motor mounts are worn. Should I replace them with OEM, or go with an aftermarket brand?

That's the mount? I've never seen one that looked like that.

The bar in the middle bolts to the brackets on the engine.

The cross piece in the picture bolts to the cross member.

With the only rubber involved being a cushion on the bar and steel all around that bar, breaking one would be rather hard.

I have killed two transfer cases, one of which I split in half.
Also I have killed several driveshafts and 44 axles, but the motor mounts are fine.

I guess you're the first person I know who's done a long block overhaul and didn't replace the engine mounts.

I got a good look at my engine mounts when replacing my leaking steering gear. The rubber on the driver's side appeared to be very punky.

I happened a quick peak at the driver's side one when I was doing something under my truck. It looked like the rubber was on its way out, I'm wondering if fuel or oil or atf got to it at some point and degraded the rubber. I put it on the list to look at better when I get a chance. It looks like my truck has had more than its fair share of leaks, so it wouldn't surprise me if it broke down chemically, even though Dave's have apparently survived forever.

Pretty sure my motor mount driver side is bad, I feel the motor pop up and a loud grinding noise until it slams back down. Least, I htink thats the problem

Do they usually have washers on the bolts to the block? When I crawled under to look it seems it was just a bolt that punched through the plate. Could have been missing a fat washer? Been raining so I haven't crawled under to verify..

The stock bolt head has a washer like extended surface on it.

Someone a while back actually had the bracket the bolts on the motor break.

I am hoping for good weather also, living 2 blocks from a, on the larger side (Catherine Creek), creek and flooding starting a few blocks down the other way .. starting to get a lil worried .. roads are starting to get closed and some peeps yards are mini lakes

To stay on topic .. my mounts look fine .. I remember going to change my Gramps mounts back in the day 300,000+ on his 86 IDI CCLB and his looked fine also!!

Last owner liked to romp on it hard, even mentioned having to replace them once.

We will see but I can feel a lot of weight moving up and then a nasty grinding noise that wont stop until that mass falls back down and it feels like only a inch or two. I've had to slam it back in a couple times by revving her and since then i take turns real gentle and it hasn't happened since unless I do gun it or turn hard.

Definitely feels like a half-ton hunk of metal coming up/down ever so much though. If it ain't a mount failure I don't know what it could be, especially considering a sharp turn or revving moves it out of or back into place (I think)... We'll see when the rain gives and lets the ground dry out.

Not sure about quality but a friend who worked at autozone for a bit said they sell them.
