Well according to the article, Fords lead is in thanks to their increase in fleet sales. If Fords Fleet and private sales are both up while GM's fleet sales are up but private sales down, that makes for a big enough margin to take the lead. Individuals make or break Auto companies, not fleets.
The point is, since GM's sales are way down (minus fleets) that increase in fleet sales for Ford was enough to give them the edge for now.
