i have a 351w in a 1990 f250 4x4 and i want to put an enexpensive loud exhaust with some noticable performance so i have a few que stions(im doing a 2 1/2 in single exhaust)
1. im going to buy a catco hi-flo cat from summit do these have the a.i.r. pipe coming out of them or will i have to get a cat just for my application?
2. wut do yall reccomend for muffler? i want loud and unrestrictive i also want cheap it has to be under 50 dollars so flows are out. i was thinking race bullets but ive never tried them????
I have the 351w in my 86 Bronco as well. For cheap exhaust I used a single 2 1/4' i/o 30" long glasspack. Sound is very agressive at WOT, but purrs at idle. Nice sound for only $16.00
I am in the process of getting a high flow cat as well. I have a smog pump, so I have to get one with an air tube. I do not ove an O2 sensor, so I do not need the bung for it, which makes the process easier.
The best price I have found so far is $56.00 shipped. Here is the link I found on this board: catco cats
I bought a Catco cat for my '95 F250 w/ 351 from Summit 6 months ago. It has a bung (or maybe 2 - can't remember) on it that was capped with an allen head plug. I only have one cat and it has the O2 sensor in front of it only. After the cat I run straight pipe 2.5 inch "Y" out each side behind the rear tires. It's not loud and obnoxious and it brings out the V8 rumble in my view. Also, sounds great at idle - just purrs. Nevertheless, I try to be considerate to my neighbors when I go to work at 4:00 a.m and not get on it (= really rumbles!) I have heard shortbed (mine's longbed) pickups with straight pipes under the rear bumper and they are a lot noisier and annoying (keep in mind noise to some = music to others!). Hope this helps you out!
jss, did you get the universal cat? how long did you get and how much as it? let me get this straight after the cat you have no muffler and its not overly loud? i was going to go out in front of the rear wheel with a glasspack so mine wouldnt be loud at all, correct?? im trying to figure out if i shoud do a muffler at all??
Honestly... the cats on our trucks really absorb a lot of the sound and the only real way you are going to get it really loud is to chop off the second cat or gut it out. Then I'd stick a Flowmaster 40 series original or Dynomax race bullet on there... That'll definitely be LOUD!!!
If ya have emissions testing... then that's a differen't story. I've heard that catco cats don't do much to increase the sound... maybe try some emico or magnaflow cats. :-x22

texaspride250: I ordered a direct fit Catco p/n CTO-9900 from Summit for $172.39. Of course Murphy's Law kicked in after buying it - I found a reference on this site for universal Catco's for 1/3 the price I paid. Anyhow, the preliminary description for this p/n said for 460 engines only, but digging deeper under "application" had a whole list of engine, drivetrain combos where it would work, including "87-94 5.8L 4x4". It was a direct bolt on for my '95 - came with all gaskets, nuts, bolts, bung plugs (not as bad as it sounds!). The timeline of this purchase went as follows:
1) no power at 110,000 miles - experienced lots of Ford commuter vehicles at work with similar miles having plugged up convertors and the fact that I had leaking fuel injectors made me think that I was dumping raw fuel into the cat for a period of time
2) Checked into OEM cats from Ford or muffler shop and they wanted $500-$600!! No ______ way! so I decided to purchase Catco from Summit. Removed old cat; it was plugged pretty good. Left muffler on.
3) Power came back and it sounded a lot better suggesting that there was in fact a V8 under the hood. However it still didn't sound good enough to me...ran like this for a month.
4) A friend of mine has a Dodge 1/2 ton in which he straight piped after the cat. It sounded great and wasn't obnoxious at all. Really aggressive sound.
5) Decided that's what I wanted to try and took the plunge. It's actually generally quieter than my friend's Dodge, but still aggressive sounding especially over 2500 rpm. Sounds real good echoing off buildings in town! It even sounds pretty good when it's almost "lugging" and it does "bark" a bit like a Jake brake between shifts.
I would recommend and this is what many people on this board recommended to me was to take the changes in steps from say quiet (i.e., stock) until you get the sound you want. There's also a website that an FTE member has (exhaustsoundclips.com ??) that has sound clips for various configurations too - that helped me out. Hope this helps you out.
on my 94 f150 351 i just cut off the muffler afther both cats ran 2.5 inch piping dualed into 3 inch tips and it is deep and throaty, not too loud at all. sounds real healthy. 80 dollars for material and labor. sounds better than most my buddies running 300 dollar setups.
