My son has A F150 4x4 XLT Flare side, that has a 5.0 w/ auto trans. About a week ago he and some buddies replaced what I was told was a broken shift tube. I was not involved in the process.
All was well for about 3 days. Now it seems that the selector will not go into park, the selector does not align with the proper gear. In short, it seems we need to hunt around with the shift handle to find "N" in order to start.
Can anyone tell me what to look for first and where to find it?
My son says he is considering putting a floor shifter in.
Good idea? Bad idea?
Has anyone here done this?
Can he use a Ford shifter out of another model?
Should he go aftermarket? Brand?
ok i have done this first i need to know what year the truck is. Mine is a 92 with an E4OD the shift tube on mine broke and it did exactly what you are describing after i put the fixed one in until i aligned it correctly if you do not put the shift tube back in the steering column properly it will do what you are describing also if you do not hook the indicator thing back up correctly you will not know what gear you are in.
I hope this helps
Truck is a 93. As stated I was not involved w/ the process of putting in new shift tube. Kids you know...... All his buddies are experts...... Just ask them! Any way, I think I will have him start over and try to get it right.
Or he can spend the money for a floor shift unit.
