Hey Bill, Remind me what trans you have in your truck.

With an overdrive trans like the AOD/AODE/4R70w that same combo needs 4.56 gears to achieve that same engine speed in OD!

So for anybody that has a 5.0 truck with 3.08 gears keep it out of OD unless you're cruising on a flat freeway.. it will actually return better milage.
You are of course correct, however these transmissions do not have OD that is not strong enough to do any serious work at lower engine speeds, so staying down in 3rd is quite necessary in sub-freeway vehicle speeds even if truck has 3.55 or 3.73 axle gears. And with rush hour traffic or city traffic I personally find the constant shifting in and out of OD rather annoying, and I can't imagine it's any good for the wear and tear on the trans internals too.

Calulators from www.4Lo.com

Calculator shows that would be just right if you were traveling at 70mph, not that I don't trust you. Is your speedo set right? I would never want 4.10s/4.11s if I was turning those rpms. Maybe you just need bigger tires.

Skyfox, did you set my tires at 31 inches for that calculation? My speedo is correct.

It's not like I want to spin that high but I'm not about to spend the money on a 3.55 ring and then instal it.

Yep, Included the 31 inchers
speed is 60mph
axle ratio is 4.11
E4OD OD ratio is .71

I'm showing 1898rpm there. The 300 should be happy as a lark.

well. Do you drive on mostly flat ground or hilly ground, more city or highway? Since your sticking with smaller tires I would say probably the 3.73's unless you drive like 85% or more in the city, or if you hit a lot of hills.

might i ask?? did you set up the gears yourself? if so did you use all the proper tools. setting up a rear end is not an easy job and requires many special tools that typically only a shop the works on rear ends has.

haha i spin my Flareside out with a 230k mile motor out with 4.10 gears to 100 mph + every time i get on the interstate. which aint often but still...

Did you reprogram your PSOM for the 31s. I really probably should do that to mine.

I know, it should be, that's the middle of the powerband. It was happier with the 3.08 on the highway.

I will say the 300 and 4.11 is really nice around town though. Too bad we can't split the gears somehow. I know this sounds stupid, but I almost wish I had something like a 4x4 system.. 3.00 in the front axle, 4.56 in the rear. Lock out the front axle going around town, then reverse the two going on the highway.

I know I know, you're thinking "No dude, that's just stupid", but I bet it would really make a good econo-truck.. Plus, if you needed to pull a heavy load, you have the gearing for it.

I never did, but my speedo is spot on and my transmission shifts "fine". Is your speedo correct???

Mine shifts fine too. The speedo is about right at lower speeds, but on the highway running about 75, the speedo reads about 70. I don't see how yours isn't the same.

Actually, this isn't stupid at all. There are better ways of accomplishing this. You can buy underdrive/overdrive systems that add another gear set just after the transmission (I think that is how it works). Basically there is high and low. This would be the perfect system.
