Well last night the seal on my pushrod cover let go (apparently I used a non-oil-compliant sealant) I lost most of my oil and ended up with oil in my distributor. My mom said she's fed up with it leaking all the time and made me get it towed to a shop to have it all buttoned up.
So it now sits in the shop, in desperate need of a rebuild, it needs a new rear main so I have to yank the engine completely out anyways, and I'm flat broke along with my family, shop wanted 1700 just for the rebuild and to put it all back together and it also needs some brake work and suspension...
And so it will sit, likely for at least a year, until I can get the money to properly fix it. and until then I'm currently vehicleless...
Joel that totally sucks, I'm sure something will work out for you as when we are stretched we raise to the occasion and do what have to and get r done.
Rather than a rebuild, you may be able to find a running "take out" 6 (here of the other site, for cheap) & swap it. Lots of guys pull their 6s to swap to v8's...
Joel: I wish you were closer, we would figure some way out to get it here and work on it!
I think Rusty '63 has a very good idea - and I will take it one step further: Look for a '96 or earlier 300, such as a wrecked truck, that runs good, has serpentine belts and all. Get the entire engine with accessories, and transplant it. I think you can do MUCH better this way. Newer engine, you'll need to put a carb on it, but for far less than 1700. I would think so anyway.
Even if you get just a long block, you can put your intake and exhaust on it.
Best of luck to you!
There's always a light at the end of a tunnel!
That's what great about this site; folks willing to help or give us the motivation or though to overcome lifes short comings.
If you where in my area I'll lean a hand!!!!!
well... BillW gave me a 240, but I'll want to pull it apart and replace all the gaskets, it needs a water pump and one bolt extracted from the head (A valve cover bolt, doh! my bad there)
But I could look at it, but even still that'll cost what 60 for the gasket set and 100 for the water pump. 30 for new pushrods just because. I could do it, but it still sucks...
Another option I've thought of... My pops has an 86 BMW 635csi, it's his baby but if it comes to it, we could put normal insurance on it (It has collector insurance now, driver has to be 25 or older) and I could drive that for a while, but overall... it's just a situation I don't really want to be in...
Nothin doing here but a $100 gasket kit and $10 in permatex is all you need here if the engine itself is ok.
Heck you may be able to just buy the valvecover and rear main seal and a can of ether to clean the distributor out. That would cost less then $50. If you can haul it to ND I will put the seals in for free!
rear main apparently requires removing the crank... the rest of the seals I can do, but as it sits it has about an 1/16 inch ridge on the block, maybe not hat big but it's definitely in need of a rebuild.
There's need & NEED. If your main concern is transportation, then you NEED something to drive. Throw in the 240 & drive it. Then rebuild your old engine as time & funds permit.
Joel, Put that 240 in it and go! dont waste your time doing any of the gaskets just replace the water pump and drop it in.
It's not about looking pretty under the hood.... it's about point A to point B. just get it running.
Sorry to hear Joel, honestly I am. getting from point A to B in this day and age is tough thing. One day at a time, you will find a way. There is good information here hope it helps Good luck
If you need a few bucks you can always hit the pawn shop or sell something just to get the wheels rolling again. I've been doing a fair amount of that lately. Barter is also an option. Time to wheel and deal good luck!
