Just bought an 08 XLT with the 5.4L and only 10,500 miles! Just wondering what I should be using for oil in it. Should i use standard stuff or the full syn? Also considering using standard with an additive like Lucas, Prolong and such. I do change at regular intervals. I do plan on using only Motocraft filters.
Also, anyone have experience with royal purple?
You'll get about 1.4 million different opinions on this.....the general consensus is semi-syn motorcraft blend oil in 5w20 and motorcraft filters.......
Indeed, search for the 1.4 opinions. But, in the end it doesn't really matter. Just use a motorcraft filter and change it at the user manual recommended interval.
A good rule of thumb but by no means a rule:
Conventional oil gets replaced every 3000 miles
Semi-syn gets changed every 5000 miles
Full syn gets changed every 7000 miles
Change the oil 5-7000 miles and use 5/20. Go with any major brand and you will be ok. I just dont get why this is so hard for people to get. Not trying to dog you here but its amazing how many topics are on this subject.
I'll tell ya this, I've been running MC 5/20 since I got my truck and have always had a ticking noise between 1100- 1500 rpm. Well I switched to high mileage 10w30 castrol with MC 820S filter and no more ticking noise. 5w20 just too light for higher mileage vehicles IMO. Just my .02 carry on.....
Pick your poison, I personally run full syn in all of my vehicles. Get it on sale, more miles between changes, and your total cost isnt that much dif. Once read a report on oil testing, in every category except price, the syn outperformed. If you only keep a vehicle a few yrs, run the cheap stuff. I drive mine into the ground, so I like to get a lot of miles on them before they go bye-bye. Never had a oil related motor prob.

The way I look at it is that the synthetic is actually cheaper than the cheap oil. It improves gas mileage, wear and tear on the motor, you get twice the distance between oil changes.
