Im currently restoring my 85 and am having a hard time finding a rust free 8ft box, or any usable box for that matter. Im located in norther Illinois and was wondering if anyone knew of any place that might have one. I found a place out in Iowa that has one, but Im having a hard time swallowing the 1350 price tag on it with no tailgate. The only other one I have found was rusted beyond repair. It is getting to the point where not having a box is going to hold the project up.
Thanks for the help.
I'm in northern Indiana there's a guy a couple miles up the road from me that has all kinds of beds an cabs that are in good condition I could try and get his number for you.
Ok thanks I would appreciate that. I knew finding a decent bed wasnt gonna be easy, but I didnt think it was going to be this difficult. Nothing on this project has been easy
I am not trying to be a smartie here. After seeing what you guys up north use as a base for restoration, I think it would be cheaper to come down south or go west to get a very nice daily driver. I recently went to Alabama and Mississippi along the coast hitting junkyards. The salt air does horrible things to these trucks. I really have a better attitude towards the salvage yards here in Louisiana. I have also been scanning Arkansas, Arizona,New Mexico, and Texas on craigslist. They have very good prices on daily drivers or restorable for under a thousand bucks.
I am from northwest Indiana and your gonna have some problems finding any really decent ones but you shouldnt spend 1350 for a bed. You can get a new truck for that price.
Hey guys, Im in the same boat. I also live in northwestern Indiana and I have been looking for a bed for awhile because I want to get my truck repainted. I have only been able to find one in the past year or so of browsing and they wanted 1200 for it. Hey Coolguy1419 if that guy you know has two or if jonbass40 doesn't want it if he has one I wouldn't mind checking it out. Im only about an hour away from Rochester. Thanks
This is exactly why you see alot of 7th gen trucks with 8th and 9th gen beds on them. It's hard to find a good bed.Alot easier for the 8th and 9th gen guys since the bed is the same 87-96.
I'll check the local junk yard the next time I go he's got quite a few trucks like ours never really looked at the beds but I'll check for u. Prolly gonna go here soon to get a different seat for my truck mine broke!
I bought a bed from the junk yard. I cost me 100 bucks. It needs sides but i dont care. I figured by the time i put sides on it i will have about 800 into it and i KNOW it will be rust free. You take a big gamble on buying a "Rust free" bed. They rot from the inside out . COuld be rust free today and rot tomorrow.
I got SUPER lucky and found a NOS pair of sides for 200. So i will only have 400 in a TRUELY RUST FREE BED
Ok thanks for looking. The problem around here is that nobody really wants the 80-86 stuff. All the 70's and 90's stuff sticks around while the 80's all go to the crusher. I guess i just might have to break down and buy a rotten box and fix it.
