I am in need of a new front drive shaft (I think). One of the U-joints in the coupling is BAD and I have tried to get it out but the way the set up is, there doesn't seem to be a way to get it out. I have heard it isn't possible and I need to replace the drive shaft, but I was reluctant to believe that. I haven't gotten it on a press yet to try, but thought I would come here for some advice. Have you guys done it before?
Second question is, is the stock front drive shaft sealed or greasable? The one I have now isn't stock and I can't remember if the stock one was or not. The one I have now is greasable and I think I am becoming more and more of a fan of sealed units. If I do have to replace the drive shaft it will be with a sealed drive shaft.
Thanks for the help guys!
Unless you have sealed CV joints, the u-joint is replaceable. You will have to drive it one way in one yoke, then drive it the other way in the same yoke to get the caps out. It will then come apart and you can remove the other caps in the same manner. It is more difficult, but it IS serviceable. Most dealers seem to think EVERYTHING is unserviceable even though most everything truly can be rebuilt.
