I washed the truck today. Started it, and pressure washed the engine bay.
Drove home, idled in the driveway for a few minutes and turned her off. Went to pull it the rest of the way into the carport and she wouldnt start. Turns over a few times and seems to choke, then turns over a few more times and chokes. I smell fuel after about 20 seconds of this repeating.
1990 460 efi. I really dont want to have to push her up the driveway with the jeep. How demoralizing for the old girl.
My first thought would obviously be that there is water in the distributor preventing it from firing and thus the smell of fuel because you are pumping fuel but not burning it. But the fact that you drove it home and it didnt run rough or miss idle makes me wonder. I used to pressure wash my engine bay on a regular basis with the truck running I just kept the nozzle away from the ignition system and never did fill er up with water. I would check it and see.
I have washed LOTS of engines and this is the first time I have had a no-start issue. Just checked the cap and there is a small amount of water in it. Very small amount. Would this still cause issues? I left the cap off and will try again after supper.
I've run into the odd situation, after getting under the hood all wet (both from a good splash and after washing it down) where the starter needed a 'wack' to (I'm guessing here) knock off any water from the contacts/windings .. might be what you need ..
After dinner and a coffee I went back to the driveway. I looked at the truck and told it, "Now if I have to push you up this driveway with my jeep your in big trouble!"
Got in and she fired right up. A little Jeep threat goes along way I guess.
