When placing in 4wd high, the light indicator does not come on but flashes 5 times and then reappears about every 5 minutes. All the while there is no 4wd working.
Thank you for responding. The vehicle is a 1996 Ford Explorer 4WD Eddie Bauer edition. When turning the **** to 4wd auto high the light does not come on immediately and when it does appear soon after the 4wd high and low lights come on and cycle every two minutes all the while there is no engagement of the 4wd.
Tony
The auto system uses 2 speed sensors that are in holes in the transfercase. The sensors monitor the speed of the rear output and the front output of the transfer case. One of those sensors is bad so the computer is not getting a reading from one of the outputs.
Look at your transfer case around the shift motor for 2 black plastic almost teardrop shaped (for lack of a better word) with wires coming out of them that have a small bolt holding them into the case. If I were you, I would just replace both sensors as they also tend to have the seals go bad and leak fluid.
I believe you have to remove a few wire pins from the t case wiring harness so just mark which wires go where and take your time.
I have the same problem in my 96 xlt. I came on here to post the same question. My 4x4 works somtimes, but when it does not the lights will flash for a while even in 2 wheel drive.
Todd,
The post reply says that there are two sensors on the side of the transfer case that need to be replaced. I am going to try that and see if it works, I don't know how soon I will do it since the snow season is almost over.
I am planning on doing the same, I have to replace some rusty rear shackles that I plan on using a friend garage to do. I will do it then. ( probably saterday or sunday)
I have not replaced anything yet do to a pinched nerve that is keeping me from getting under a truck for any reason. I did plug in my scanner and it did not read any problem in the drive train (had another issue but that will be for a differnt thread.) I did have another problem when I used the 4x4 to get further up my driveway and the next day when we got on the road we were still in 4x4 low even the the selecter was in 2x2. the light was not indicating it was in 4x4. We pulled back into the drive and put it in auto 4x4 and drove up and down, eventually it went out of low then I put it in 2 wheel drive then the lights kept flashing for the next hour untill we turned it off again. Does anyone know if I am doing any damage by driving it like this?
