I got the old water pumps off my '50 last week and I'm ready to install the new ones. Does anybody have any tips or advice about how to torque the bolts down? Seems like a pretty small space to fit a big torque wrench, and how do you read the guage if you have needle type wrench?
I just hand tightened mine, I doubt if any of the old timers grabbed a torque wrench to tighten them. I just bought a new torque wrench that snaps when it reaches the torque limit, kind of a neat tool.
Thanks, Bob. When you say "hand tightened," do you mean that you tightened it until it felt right? My main concern is that I always seem to tighten things too much. Always have.
Yeah, just cranked until they felt tight. Maybe I did it wrong but they don't leak. I've rarely torqued anything to spec unless it's something like head bolts. I guess I've never thought about it.
I've never torqued anything other than head bolts. Waterpump bolts I do like Bob suggested. My trick is to use a 3/8 wratchet - the shorter handle keeps me from getting enough leverage to get in trouble. Be sure to use a stainless bolt inside the pump and use lock washers - you'll feel the lock washer pull tight and I quit at that point.
