I have developed a misfire in my 01 V10 Ex. Rough low idle and poor acceleration. I also notice a very predominate rotten egg smell (which is the cat trying to burn up the raw fuel). Going to pull out my Snap On Modis to try and pull codes and/or read the misfire counters tomorrow. Hopefully I can I.D. a cylinder. I would suspect a COP but am not sure.
Sounds like you will find a bad cop. After finding I would check out some of the other boots on there under the cops. With bad boots you help the cops go out, and they are cheaper to replace than the cops are.
P0310 - Misfire, cylinder 10. Pulled COP and checked with DVOM. Open at the secondary side (B+ to high tension lead). Replaced COP, cleared DTC, rechecked and it's fine now. I am thinking about replacing the other 9 as a preventative measure. The Motorcraft part I bought this morning was $47 at O'Reilly's. Does anyone have any experience with no name brand eBay ones? How about Borg Warner?
Ex started acting up on the way home last night. Missfiring and generally feeling the wallet about to be lightened! Got up this morning and dragged out my 4' ladder. Popped the hood and started jiggling COPs! Found one loose one! Removed and put it back in! Went for a ride and the old girl ran great! Whew! Doing the plugs et al must get really interesting in the back! Something to look forward to!

Darn! I went for a ride tonight and the old girl ran great...until I started home. The misfire is back! I did not check the COP yet. It was loose yesterday. I thought that I had found the problem and had taken care of it. I'll check it again tomorrow. I read some place that a rebuild kit is available for the COPs. Maybe it was the boots that could be rebuilt?
I recently purchased a 2003 F-250 super duty 6.8L V10 and it sputters around 2000rpm creating a rapid "ppsstt" noise. Does anyone know what could be causing this? i suspect a bad coil pack or spark plug. I'm hoping someone has had the same problem and can point me in the right direction on what it may be....before i start spending money. Can a misfire cause more damage if not fixed right away? Its been 5000 miles already and I'm getting nervous. You all seem very knowledgable and I feel I'm came to the right place. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I purchased a set of 10 from ebay for like $100, I installed them on my 5.4 expy over a year ago, 5K miles and still running strong. Like I said I purchased 10 so I have two new spares, one in each truck, the Excursion still has OEM but when it's time I will purchase another set.

Go and have someone hook up a scanner (Auto Zone will do it for free) and see if there is a code set. If it is missing badly there will be one. Most likely the coil is failing. The only time I would suspect the boot to be the problem is if you can see that it is damaged (torn). Otherwise it is the coil itself that it bad. I checked mine with my DVOM and the secondary side was was open. Boot was fine.

Again, go and have someone hook up a scanner and see if there is a code. What worries me with this is the noise you are hearing. Does it sound like a vacuum leak or pressure releasing? I would check this immediately. No way would I drive 5k miles with this situation. Yes, a misfire can do damage to the engine and the catalytic converter.
Yes thats exactly what it sounds like! I'm very knowledgable with trucks but i"ve checked the transmission, vaccuum lines and exhaust and was nervous about spending money on the wrong parts. I've heard these motors are notorious for this problem and your advice really helped me pin-point the problem. I'm heading to auto-zone now to diagnose and purchase a new "COP". Thanks again buddy!

I would also check to make sure all of the plugs are ok. It may be time to change them.

I replaced the boot today. I did not get to drive the old girl afterwards because everyone parked in front of me! I will drive it tomorrow after the hordes depart! I will probably buy my own scanner at some point. They are reasonable nowadays. Sears sells them "Good","Better","Best". May be a "$" decide. The plug area seemed wet. I blew it dry with mycompressor. The boot was a little rust stained with little cracks. Fingers are crossed!

If you had one boot go bad, I would suspect all of them. Now is a good time to catch them before they throw out a cop, as they are much cheaper.

Was there a code set?
Was it water in the plug well? How did it get there? There should be none normally.
This sounds like my van, right before it blew a plug. you need to check this out immediately. you do not want that expense.
As a side note, this is my first post, hi everyone. If you do your own plugs, make sure to torque them. unless you have a newer 1, then you should torque them also.
